Game of Darts

Post by HindianaJones »

Irongon wrote:Game of Darts!

A new game has been added to Arelith, and is worth special mention. This is a heavily programmed mini-game that provides a full emulator of a working dartboard. A number of factors, including practice contribute to a player's skill, and IS NOT based off the combat attack bonus of the character.

The numbers on the board are 'known' to the engine, so aiming for any number will increase the chance of hitting adjacent numbers on any miss, and the chance of a 'Bouncer' is increased when targeting areas where the wire frame is more closely knit.
Just wondering if we're able to get more information on this. Question spam below:

If it's not based on AB, is there any bonus from a +1 dart?
Is dexterity score taken into account?
Are various bonuses, such as weapon focus dart, taken into account?
Would spells like bless or true strike help?
Is it based on a hidden d20 roll, or another base?
Do the odds of hitting/bouncing/missing/dropping change based on practice level?
How many levels of practice are there?
Do these go down over time?
Do they go up based on hitting a desired target, or just hitting the board in general?
Is it similar to an experience system where say you hit the target 5 times to go up, then 20, then 100, etc?
Is this an Arelith original, or appropriated content?

(I'll just add that this is an amazing game to play, really fun!)

Action Replay will be able to give a better answer here, though the exact mechanics won't be revealed. It is quite complex and practice can really improve one's game, and if I recall correctly it also features 'form', so even the best player can have their off day.

I also believe that enchanted (+1 etc) darts do help.

Oh, and it is an Arelith original. I really hope to see more carefully scripted games appear over time.

Sounds good! Yeah, I'm not really looking for exact mechanics, but definitely a better idea at least.

Don't wanna give too much away as already mentioned by Irongron, but here's a few:
- Yes, enchanted Darts gives you a bonus.
- Alcohol goes well with Dart Games, to an extent.
- Certain Feats help with dart throwing. The Weapon Focus ones are a given, the other ones shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Dart can be a rough game.
- Having good Spot helps as well
- Spells do not help
- It gets more difficult to hit your target the closer it is to the Inner Bull.
- As most things on Arelith, or NWN in general, there are rolls involved.
- There is a hidden "Skill" for Dart Games. The more you play, the better you get. You will see a prompt though when your skill increases.

On the topic of games in Arelith, Symphony and I were talking about blackjack or some sort of gambling game in Arelith. I've made a blackjack game before in C for a class, it didn't have an interface though.

Thanks for the feedback! Is there an upper limit to the skill levels?

I think so... my halfling took less than 2 RL days to hit a point where he stopped gaining any more dart skill, and he still misses way more than I would hope the best DEX-based halfling dart players would. I wondered if maybe the DEX score affected how quickly you gained dart skill, as INT does for language learning.

If the dart game is being looked at, I'd suggest increasing the cap on skill gained through practice, or making the rate of progression a bit slower.

Sure I'll take a look at it. Also DEX has nothing to do with any Dart throwing.

Dex -should- have something to do with Dart Throwing.
I-I mean, it's kinda... the basic attribute used when determining the accuracy of any throwing weapon, so why wouldn't it?

It's odd to me that DEX has nothing at all to do with it. Maybe it could add somehow to your max skill level. That is, it doesn't give any boost at all without practice, but it increases your maximum potential.

Potentially sure. Though a game of darts is more about keeping your nerves cool and being focused. But Lorkas' idea is cool.

To make the game actually fun for everyone and not only dexers.

I'm not saying "You have to be a dexer to win", but "dex -is- a factor".

as a none dex based character, i think its good its got nothing to do with it, because i want to be able to enjoy a casual game of darts with friends and if its already obvious who will win from the start whats the point in playing for anyone who isnt a dex character?
