I would say they didn't become nescessary. Seemingly similar words but in fact quite different.

Preparation and not requiring the preparation is better then not being prepared and needing it.
This.

Consider it like locking your home after you go out for work. Do you come home vaugly dissapointed that you weren't robbed? Do you go 'gosh darnit, I wish I hadn't bothered locking it now! That was pointless!' Nope- You do it because even though there's a high chance things would be fine, even if you /did/ leave it unlocked, it's better to lock it and be sure.

It's the same with this hurricane. Yeah, all the prep, all the waryness- nothing happened. Slightly dissapointing and that's understandable. But still very much worth it for a) peace of mind b) because if things had gone bad, you might have really, really, really regretted not preparing.

I'd much rather look like an idiot for evacuating when it ended up not being needed then be the idiot filmed from the air trapped on their own roof in 50 mph winds and waves lapping up to the chimney.

It was projected to be MUCH worse than it was, and for this I'm thankful.

Related note. Do we have anyone playing here from the north of the Philippines?

Please be aware there is now the chance that due to the high pressure system that has been steering Florence not doing as was initially expected, that Florence could go out to sea and make a second landfall as a tropical storm or category 1 hurricane, in NC again.

News: OMG hurricane of a lifetime!
NC: Meh, that wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought.
Florence: Best 2 out of 3?

If this happens it will cause a lot more flooding. The ground is beyond saturated already.
