if i die in pvp the character becomes a cripple for fifty real life years
you don't have to actually do that but people who just shrug it off are dumb
also 'i died but then i lived' is not actually interesting
also i hate that kelemvor npc
edit to add to reiterate to addendum
even if it's clear the other party is just killing for an ear or something, i feel like not trying to make something of it is boring
even if it's not done with the amount of effort you'd want, it's been done. handle it accordingly.
ignoring it out of convenience is lame.

“Hahaha, oh man, I must have had a blinder last night! I woke up, naked, in a field, with a killer headache! No memory of how I got there, but whatever I did, I hope I had fun! Pass the aspirin, and keep the noise down, I need to sleep.”
It’s not like most characters in Arelith don’t drink alcohol like it’s going out of style.
There, sorted.

"What do you meeean? You look all fine and dandy to me!"
"Nahhh, your eyes need a checkup for failing to recognize that!"

"Aspirin? No clue what that is, but here, try this out." They pass over a potion of clarity with a neutralize passion chaser

I've noticed a growing trend of people using memory loss as an acceptable means to claim someone else died in PvP, in character.
Example: Susie comes home but can't remember what happened when she went to Bob's shop after hours. Reaction from others, "She must have died when she went to Bob's", "Bob must have done it".
I've personally found this pushing towards metagaming - I'm not a DM so don't quote me on this, though maybe one will chime in.
I think this is what this thread should have been about.. meaning you do properly RP not remembering your death and circumstances around it, but others use your amnesia as proof you died. Like “You have memory loss? You were probably killed by XXX!” so they can foist or force that knowledge onto you, that you yourself are cautiously avoiding RPing.
I’ve seen that happen and it probably shouldn’t, and our characters shouldn’t know death amnesia exists or at least shouldn’t use it as proof of anything. Most of all just respect that others are trying to follow the rule after they died so you’re putting them in a rough spot by circumventing it, even if you think it’s being helpful.

As written it's a bad rule.
So players role playing in a way to attempt to explain the total lack of someones knowledge about there greatest enemy ever existing is not that surprising.

Selectively choosing to ignore rules you don't agree with isn't a privilege players have.

This thread is a perfect reminder of why I used to say a heavy pvp culture and a story driven server don't mix well my first two years of kicking it here on Arelith. I'm with Lively Particle on this, in the sense that pretending it never happened is generally the path of least resistance. I think I will even take a few days off like they suggested going forward after it happens to give the other guy the "win".
Does that mean I am at least dancing dangerously close to the "respect death" rule? Probably, but I'm not sure what else to do save being the only guy who stays dead with his character after random pvp. Hell, even if I could remember I would probably forget lol, because the one thing worse than the awkwardness around just being killed knowing I am going to continue on is the prospect of six months of "I kill them they kill me" every other day.
This isn't an inditement of the rules by the way, I think it's the only thing that works for arelith. It's just a biproduct of someone like me who would climb to the tallest building possible to scream "story first" being in the same sandbox with those who actively manipulate the story to get to the pvp as soon as possible.

I've said it before, I will say it again. PVP is an RP tool. This isn't a MOBA or MMO. You want to play to PVP all day long because 'I just want to PK people', this shouldn't be the game you want to play. This isn't a game you can 'win' over someone by PVPing them. This is a game you can all win because good stories are told.
If you are PVP'd due to an escalating, collaborative and engaging conflict story? Great, give it the respect its due. If you were just on your way to do a writ before your work day started and get PK'd with a 2 line warning, give it the respect its due. Or simply RP your death how you want to. Everyone's always quick to judge and tell you how you 'should be RPing'. Follow the rules, but ultimately you are the narrator of your own story. If people immediately jump to the conclusion you must have been killed because you are in pain or suffering memory loss, then guide the conversation away from PVP assumptions if that is what you want to do or at the very least remove yourself from the investigations as per the rules.

If you want to accurately roleplay meaningful death, you should have that character take a break from the server for an ??? period of time and leave everyone guessing if you rolled.
LivelyParticle has it right.
This puts all the power in the hands of the loser, and how collaborative storytelling really should be. I remember the villains and antagonists who bowed out graciously far more than the heros.

My PC has never died. Any time he would have died? "Well I'd have remembered dying if I died, so clearly I just hit my head".
Simple as.

If I'm out and about soloing through a writ and get my butt beat because I bit off more than I can chew, I'll usually play it off as "They roughed me up, but I got away. oof, ouch, my bones" while I deal with t he rez-sickness rather than "I have no idea what happened. Why am I tired?" as I would if I died in a group or in a PvP encounter.
One time, my character got a critical failure while climbing one of the more dangerous climbable entrances into the Deep Wells. She was with a group who raised her when they safely climbed down, but I liked to think that it was long enough of a fall that she could still remember losing her grip, even if she doesn't remember the moment of impact. Something that turned all of her "falling dreams" into recurring nightmares of that very event.
