As someone who has dabbled in software construction before, I feel like I have to come with one small input about this cross-compatibility stuff:
Don't.
Why?
Because NWN:EE is a continuous project, and the code of the game will change.
Connecting to a server with a different version than your client can be extremely unstable because of potential differences between the client and the server, and at best, it will work for a while - until some update to the EE code is implemented and adds a feature that doesn't exist in the original version... and boom. Cross compatibility over.
This is a fact.

IMO if i am going to stay with Arelith I'll buy EE (but only when it's released and all the post release bugs and issues are dealt with). I am not going to fool around with hacking up a game to get it to work with EE on account I think that doing so will only make the game unstable and a lot worse than spending th $20 for EE. With EE you get something that (hopefully) will be stable and has tech support so you can find more universal solutions that work.
Getting 1.69 to work with EE is certainly possible. No one said that wasn't the case. But it's not feasible to support both 1.69 and EE at the same time. It sounds like a recipe for tech support nightmare for both gamers and the support staff. I'm not going through that much effort and pain for a 15 year old game that I had a lot of fun with.

As far as I’m aware, there won’t be any fiddling with EE to get it to work with Arelith, besides linking your CD keys to the new system which sounds really straightforward.

How do we do it?

That's the gist. The rest will, I believe, be handled on the dev side of things.

I"d imagine it would be something similar to the way you had to give Arelith your public key when you bought NWN from GOG. How hard can it be?

I don't think heavy hak servers have a choice, they need a stagnant base (old nwn) for all their haks. every patch and update Beamdog do, will break their server. They are better off waiting a few years to move over, when NWN EE is more stable.
Arelith is lucky in that sense, since we never went haks.

How do hak servers have it any worse? It’s been literally years since an official patch, but I thought back then they only had to update their tlk or whatever and it would be fine?

Just to reiterate what Liareth said...
NWN EE is in effect a patch on NWN, no other patch was made back compatible and many PW servers had a lot of discussion around whether they should upgrade to 1.69 when that came out.
Whilst EE to 1.69 may be working now, there's no guarantee this will work in the future and no guarantee that it wont totally screw stuff up either.
Making EE back compatible means making every future development work with 1.69 without screwing things up, literally doubling the work involved in testing every new patch and feature.

If I buy it now, am I guaranteed to get in the head start? That’s the only part that didn’t seem really clear to me.

I agree, the wording was a bit confusing, but the answer is yes.

Worth noting that you should not update your client until the server updates. That usually happens some time over the weekend (patches come out on Friday) but shortly when we have NWNX working, it may have a longer lag, since I expect NWNX to need rebuilding against each patch.

Does anyone know if these updates are automatic? I've tried looking for an update button but I've been unable to find one.

What's the impact of increasing texture memory from 64mb to 2047mb? In layman's terms.

High poly models will no longer cause client lag, enabling for "nicer looking" things to be added without compromising performance.

Horses have lots of potential for pws. At least for rp purposes. Jousting matches

the medieval fantasy version of football.
