Hurricane Florence Thread; Mandatory Evacuations Have Begun

Thoughts here are mine alone, when making decisions consult the National Hurricane Center.

Mandatory evacuations have started. If you live in any areas where an evacuation has been ordered you must go.

NHC current image (may be out of date, but should update. Click here for the current NHC track)

This is expected to make landfall as a MAJOR HURRICANE, evacuations have begun four days early, this is a serious storm, if you are told to leave, you must go.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/ready.php
Basic Disaster Supplies Kit

To assemble your kit, store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag.

A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:

Water - one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
Food - at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
Flashlight
First aid kit
Extra batteries
Whistle to signal for help
Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Manual can opener for food
Local maps
Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
I will update OP periodically. Do not rely on it, instead use the actual NHC website, and consult local officials if you have any questions.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo.php?basin=atlc&fdays=5

As of now, The official Hurricane Center forecast suggests that peak winds will reach 150 mph between Tuesday and Wednesday, just 7 mph below Category 5.

I will update the OP when I get the chance, aka not nearly as much as the NHC will update.

Again, use the NHC, not me, when making decisions!

Not official, but forecasts are now predicting a Cat 5 landfall.

Expect winds of ≥ 157 mph or ≥ 252 km/h.

Please do not mess around. If you are in the path of 150 mph winds you cannot survive it. Evac as you've been told.

Virginia now has some evacuation zones.

What i want to know is where is it going to go after it hits land. Current course seems to be a straight line but i was told there is a possibility it will turn north and head up to the northeast which is where i am.

OP updated with evacuation info and new tracks.

Ladies and gentlemen, if you live in the hurricane watch area, you need to seriously consider evacuation. If you live in an area with a mandatory evacuation order, you need to go.

As a small add-on here, some areas are expected to get 45 inches of rain, in addition to the storm surge.

Here's what that may look like.

Please leave if told. This isn't something you can survive.

If you do intend to stay, despite everyone telling you to leave, put an axe in your attic. Many drown when the waters rise, they flee to the attic, and realize there is no way out and the water keeps coming. With an axe, you can at least chop your way out and try and swim when everything you own is under a 20 foot storm surge and 4 feet of rain.

Best of luck to those on the coast, get out while there is still time, and gas to be bought, to do so.

I'm in Raleigh, where we fully expect the storm to roll over us. 90% of gas stations are out of fuel, and milk, bread, and water are out of stock in 70% of locations, with the remaining 30% being guarded by police.

Take it seriously, be ready to bug out if nescessary, yes, even if you're as inland as me.

It's headed south now.

Be careful if you're in Georgia.

Here's your sign: Waffle House closed until after Florence

http://www.wmbfnews.com/story/39077544/ ... r-florence
Many from the South decide how severe a storm is and if it warrants evacuation based on if Waffle House shuts its doors or not, and on Wednesday it appears some have ahead of Florence.

The Waffle House on Frontage Road in Myrtle Beach was eerily empty two days before Hurricane Florence is expected to make landfall somewhere in the Carolinas, a sign to many that this storm is ones to take seriously.

There is even a Waffle House Index that many, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, use to determine the severity of a storm.

If Waffle House is open and serving a full menu, the index is green.

If it's open but serving a limited menu, that means the index is yellow.

If a Waffle House is closed, the index turns red.

According to an article from The Southern Weekend, Hurricane Matthew was so threatening that all of the Waffle Houses from Titusville to Fort Pierce on I-95 in Florida were closed ahead of the storm’s landfall.

Where I am we're only getting some rainfall and some middling winds. Overall, we almost feel like we've been stood up, central NC expected something a bit more... well... more.

We simply expected more. Where I am, all our preperations ended up being ultimately pointless.

I wouldn't say pointless.

I would say they didn't become nescessary. Seemingly similar words but in fact quite different.

Preparation and not requiring the preparation is better then not being prepared and needing it.
