With monks damage and attack bonuses, while using unarmed attacks drawing from their equipped hand slot, it is effectively the weapon they are wielding. Despite this, they are treated as armour within the mechanics of the game. If monk gloves were tagged in some way as weapons they could be allowed access to customization that other weapon wielders are afforded.

I think this would cause a number of balance issues if approached this way.
