Minor thing. Could it be given a distinct colour or graphic?

I had half a party die because they tried to hide in the nice safe darkness spell just now.

Might make it a little more usable in party situations.

Also, the actual damage effect of the spell does not seem to correspond to the size of the darkness.

It's a new kind of natural selection after you tell them don't go in the dangerous killing field and they do anyway they deserve there fate.

Sort of, except it is visually identical to a darkness spell. Which you *would* hide in as a matter of course.

I think it might be intentional, to be used to trick characters to run into it. It's a storm from the Plane of Shadows so trickery and darkness are par for the course.
