Earthkin Defender not releveing and sticks at lvl 6

Am trying to relevel up my duergar earthkin defender after the update ... but it won't level past level 6 despite being an epic character previously .. wondered if anyone knew why ?
When I level up, select skills and the feat at lvl 6 and finally hit OK button, nothing happens insofar as it stays at lvl 6 wizard (path of the spellsword) no matter how many times I try to level up to lvl 7.
