Deer as Henchmen

I notice that deer sometimes have issues with following as henchmen.
It seems like some of them follow you just fine and run behind you, while others just stand like statues and sometimes end up having to teleport to you (this was especially true of the deer in the Lye Astaldera. Perhaps this is because the animals are more fixtures than animals, and usually don't hostile.)
It can be difficult to get them to move with you or follow. I thought that doing associate tool on them and turning it off fixed this, but it didn't seem to be the case. Once they moved through a transition, they stopped working again.
I know people don't really often choose deer as henchmen (I like to because my character loves deer a lot) - but it was just something I noticed.
