Swashbuckler and Elven Chain Main

Description of Bug Experienced:
In Arelith Wiki, specifically in the Smithing page, is described the following passage:

Image

I admit it's very clear in the text that's described "(...) Spellsword Bladesinger Path and for Swashbuckler light armor requirements.

Point is, unlike spellsword - where a bladesinger is made for light armor but base class template allow medium armor - a swashbuckler does not receive medium armor proficiency naturally in Arelith (and neither should). Thus, pure swashbucklers and multi classed ones in the roguish classes or monks also does not have medium armor proficiency. This make impossible to use the armor in first place.

I will not argue that Swashbucklers or the other mentioned classes should receive medium proficience, they shouldn't, and i will put this upfront, it was my mistake to overlook the mechanical need of medium armor proficiency, but Str based swashbucklers are either hindered by the need of not be a pure class or the imposition of pick medium armor proficiency as a feat.

Some points that are worth to input:

1 - The least relevant - elven chainmail, on lore, act as light armor and not medium armor:

3e SRD source
Forgotten realms wiki

2 - The more relevant - Arelith show intent of allow swashbuckler to wear Elven Chainmail as described in the smithing wiki page.

3 - A non multiclassed Spellsword can freely use elven chainmail a non multiclass swashbuckler cannot.

Steps to reproduce the Bug:

Try to equip an elven chain mail, the system will not allow as you lack the proficiency naturally, unless other multiclass give it to you or you pick the proficiency with a feat.

Expected Result:

Elven Chainmail should act as light armor when managed by a swashbuckler.

Actual Result:

Swashbuckler can't use elven chain mail unless: (i) pick medium armor as a feat, (ii) multi-class to another class that give medium armor proficiency for free.

Additional Information/Notes

This may be taken as intended behavior and i will be ok with it, but if the original intent was to allow swashbuckler to freely use elven chain mail, giving the Str Swashbuckler an alternative path, it's not working.

I'm afraid we can't really circumvent this proficiency limitation, and giving Swashbuckler medium proficiency just for one item doesn't feel right either. Sorry about that! I hope there's a way to adjust the build accordingly :)

Can the Elven chainmail armor be traded by a light armor version of the same armor with bladesinger or swashbuckler use only requirement (and a 300UMD requirement so people don't overcome the class limit)?

If not i will eat the loss, my fault for not look better the mechanics, and will start to look for a substitute.

Strength based swashbucklers can use draconic armor. It's light by default, gives +12 ac like the elven, just has different stats.

Thanks for the kind remind BattleDrake, i will probably go that path if i can't use elven chainmail.

technically I think we can create a new AC category that uses light armor proficiency and then put the elven chain in that AC category

but I haven't tested that theory nor am I confident it's the correct solution
