What I envision is primarily cosmetic. I understand why there are items that are locked behind UMD to use, but it doesn't make sense that a book would require UMD and not Lore. Some kind of mysterious orb or weird gadget would make more sense considering the UMD requirement. They could even still be found on dungeon bookshelves like scrolls are; who doesn't shove random knicknacks on their bookshelves?
