Hemomancer, Alignment, and Evil Magic

Post by BHR55 »

This suggestion is meant to address the setting, and some things that I feel could be better fleshed out. Hemomancer as a class is neat, and seems to be fun to play. It also sees it's main class features tagged as "Evil" Spells, and an alignment that is non-good similar to Palemaster. Only in general they are not treated nearly the same as a Palemaster, despite to your average joe on the street cutting themselves in ritual fashion to conjure spells forth.

Spells like Blackfire, Avascular Mass come from the Book of Vile Darkness or the Complete Arcane and are inherently evil because of the torturous way you kill someone, and or burn their soul. Anyone pulling someone's blood through their skin to them make a sticky web out of it is pretty messed up. Similarly Massacre and Soul Shriek are tagged as Evil I imagine for similarly thematic reasons, but their use does not seem to get the expected reaction from people in the setting.

Since automatic alignment adjustments would be more harm than good, I would actually like to see more us of the blood surge mechanic. I felt that this was a decent representation of the price of corrupt magic(from the Book of Vile Darkness). Instead of letting Hemomancers, Spec Necro, and Undying pact casters be immune to the negative effects I think they should simply scale to a lower minimum chance of a blood surge occurring. Even Wild Mages have some risk at their maximum level of mastery, the risk should not just go away. Maybe even have the maximum lowest risk be available only to pure 30's in the class, on a similar scale to Wild Mage.

Some of the instant death effects could be removed, but there should always be a 5% chance and maybe a small radius of 5 meters for those around the caster to be effected. Playing with dangerous and corrupt forces in town squares has a cost if you want an easy path to power. Leveraging the existing mechanical penalty introduced instead of removing it for the classes that clearly take the easiest road forward should go some way towards helping to set the theme that this is not just an ordinary thing to be bleeding ourselves out in the open.

The rest would take care of itself with role play, but this small adjustment would be in keeping with themes I think.

There will be a slight update and one future development that will address the points here. Although, it will not follow the suggestion to the letter.
