Dark Invocations

I've been discussing this in Discord with someone and we thought it'd benefit from having additional input so:

The premise is adding up to two actual Invocations per pact. Just like any other Epic Spell, the Invocation still has to be selected. The prerequisites should be x Spellcraft AND the associated Epic pact.

The below is a first draft; just spit-balling ideas.

Code: Select all

Unseelie Fey:
Enthralling Charm (radial > stronger charm monster, dominate monster)
Feywild Veil: Blend with the Feywild energies, becoming ethereal and gaining resistance to all damage types for a limited time.

Fathomless:
Maelstrom's Fury: pulls in targets (dark undertow). targets in aoe take cold damage and are slowed.
Abyssal Deluge: massive wave, damage and knockdown

Star:
Stellar Guidance: Gains advantage on saving throws for a duration. (reroll chance while the buff is active?)
prophesizing the sky: Mass Hex

Abyssal:
Abyssal Chains: snaring cc, ongoing necrotic damage

Infernal:
Flames of Damnation: fire burst
Infernal Mark: Brand a target with infernal sigil. When target takes damage, the mark activates dealing additional fire damage.

Hag:
Cackling Hex: dot damage & save vs [new?] curses
Hags' Whispers: See Dis drugs for disorient, psychic damage (confuse / fear in PVE)

Undying:
Touch of decay: dot necrotic damage & saves vs str reduction, healing reduction
Undying Resurgance: Inability to drop below 5% health during the effect.

It might be nice if each had a passive portion to accompany the actual spell.
Like say ESF: Enchantment if Enthralling Charm is taken with GSF: Enchantment.
Or +Hex of Hallucination to Starlocks that choose prophesizing the sky.

Warlocks aren't hurting in the power department, but if this was fluff I'd be 100% down.

I'm never the person to go to for balancing, so I seldom have a gauge on power. That said, fluff is fine too! I posted here in hopes that someone had specific ideas that they wanted to input before anything is taken to the suggestions board.

I think there's far too little breathing room on feats in the typical warlock build for fluff feats to get much use, sadly.

That being said, I would love abyss locks to get some kind of -fate or way to call a specific surge. Whether that comes in the form of a feat or not. A lot of them besides the harm, double cast, FOIG DEMON SUMMON and such are already not that useful, and it is one of the weaker pacts overall.

I'd love some flavor addition that isn't just... rng. You can argue it'd be too strong but they already got basically not much going for them compared to their infernal cousins other than maybe you rng a ghostform and it saves you or something. Basically never happens. DC blast curses are bad compared to just free damage. The intimidate skill bonus is just... not very useful at all (even though it fits the pnp theme of demonic casters getting a bunch of strength related bonuses that don't really help them at all). The list goes on.

alternatively we can ditch the wild magic gimmick

Keep in mind that I am not good with builds or balancing.
But wouldn't it be possible to add things like these as bonus feats to facilitate the improve of fluff to classes, in general?

As in: provided the Warlock has an Epic Pact, they can at level 2[something] select one of those spells as a bonus feat.

Well, the idea is that these are selected during the Warlock bonus feats in Epic levels: (24,25,28,30). Though, if Warlocks are also able to take Dark Invocations during general feats, it works just as well.

Warlocks are able to take their epic spell equivalencies as general feats, assuming they meet other prerequisites.
