Rogues can wield many complex weapons which normally require Martial, such as the Longsword.

They, however, cannot wield simple weapons. Most classes, even sorcerers, can wield simple weapons.

This means rogues can wield quarterstaves, but not spears, and handaxes, but not sickles.

This is negated by taking a class that gets Simple or Martial Proficiency, but for some builds this is not possible until deeper in the spread, and some builds need to be able to wield these weapons in order to qualify for certain feats.

This seems like an oversight by Bioware, when you consider that Rogues in source content can wield these weapons.

Therefore, suggesting adding Simple Proficiency to rogues.
