So, this month's GameInformer magazine is touting the dawn of AAMPGs - Asymmetrical Action Multiplayer Games, in which the game allows one player to be the bad guy and/or boss and work against the rest of the players as an antagonist. It touts this as revolutionary, and "Only made possible by the advances in next-gen consoles."
Anyone want to burst their bubble to tell them NWN servers were doing this old school style for the past 11 years?

GameInformer is poorly informed. Left 4 Dead also accomplished this in 2008, and there were a few Source Engine (HL2) mods that did this. There was one that was really cool where one player played the game as a RTS style commander and sent troops against a class-based squad of five players who played the game like a shooter.
And yes, of course, NWN.

One of the most lovely features of the Prisoners of Mist NwN module was the option to play an actual Monster. It had to be approved by the DM team, a form had to be written, but once you are ok-ed, you could go in game, get a reskin, monster abilites 10-15 levels , and 1 month of lifespan to terrorize the PC heroes. To cause drama, set up hunts, be a terror in the night for a short time, inspire fireplace stories and so on. Assymetrical action -is- fun.
