I noticed this in Sinfar and I thought it was a nice change. The way it works there is that each Song has an aura, or a circle, that surrounds the Bard. If you were in radius, you benefited from the song (or suffered from it, in the case of an enemy). The Bard Song's reach was bigger than the Curse Song's, and they were differentiated by colors as well (blue and red). Like with the regular Curse Song, there wasn't any roll to make - once you were in the area of effect, you suffered the penalties. But if you escaped the aura, you were free from the penalties.
I think it has a nice RP touch to it that those in the actual vicinity of the Bard enjoy the character's encouragement, but obviously it has some mechanical advantage too. Mostly for the Curse Song. Bard Song is used before charging, so you don't exactly feel the time it takes to "cast" it, because it's outside combat. But Curse Song has to wait until you're close to the enemies, and it means you lose a round after combat actually begins. With this aura you can cast Curse Song a safe distance away, and then have your Bard charging with his demoralizing battle tune already on his lips and still affecting the enemies.
