Portals For Everyone!!! Oh Sorry Myon.

Post by The Kriv »

Was reading the topic on portal restrictions, and got to thinking about poor Myon. No Source portal. No Port. No back door, No sneak route. And the only other settlement with a portal destination arguably far is Guldorand, but even Guldorand's destination portal is "technically" in the area adjacent to the town transition entrance, where Myon's closest destination portal Three Transitions away.

Counting the transitions to get access to a settlement's Entrance (not counting a transition that puts you INSIDE a Settlement)

Guldorand: (as mentioned) One transition to access entrance -Back door? Yes.
Cordor: One Transition to access Entrance - Back door? Yes.
Sibyad: One Transitions to Access Entrance - Back door? Yes.
Burrowhome: One (or Zero) to Access Entrance - Back Door? Yes (Ferry)
Brog: Zero Transitions to access Entrance - Back door? Yes.
Wharftown (ruined): Zero Transitions to access Entrance (granted that entrance is now blocked) - Back door? Yes.
Andunor: Zero Transitions to access Entrance - Back door? Yes.

Myon: THREE TRANSITIONS to access Entrance - Back door? No.

I think, given the current state of things, Myon could stand to have maybe a single Source Portal.. maybe to some fixed or limited destinations.

Thoughts?

There's a reason my Ar-Tel-Quessir has barely visited Myon.

The closest portal to Myon is in the Ruins of the Old Stonehold. It mildly annoys me that Myon is pretty far from the nearby source/destination portals, while also being far away from an NPC such as Laurick that makes everything much easier when travelling.

Technically, Myon has 3 portals very close to it, giving it the highest portal range in the game, two of which are source portals.

1. The Arelith Forest.
2. Ruins of old Stonehold. (Source)
3. Minmir Falls. (Source)

Its also one of the most secure cities in the game quite literally. So I think it has plenty of give and take for not having its own personal portal source when it takes maybe 3-5 minutes to walk over to one.

The only “problem” I see with Myon’s seclusion is, is that the near portals are in dangerous territory. I do think the seclusion issue is solvable IC, without needing to necessarily make it easier to get to. But it’s a community job rather than a dev job.
There are many elves who don’t go to Myon all that often, don’t live there, and are completely uninvolved in its politis or life because it’s basically inaccessible for new elves off the boat.

By the time a baby elf has reached enough oomph to survive the trip there they will in many cases already have established elsewhere RP wise (if they ever hear about it ic in first place ;) my character went for a whole 2 rl weeks without learning of its existence and without meeting another Myon Elf, and got it shown by a human :P)

And yes... there is the caravan. But that again helps little if baby elf knows nothing about Myon in first place ;)

Overall, I actually think there are too many portals in the system. Definitely with Seven Sonns of Sin on that one. If portals were to be reduced to potential hub areas, then yes, Myon likely should have one close by. Saver for n00bs, too. Maybe even racial restricted like the earthkin ones?

But other than that... Needs solving IC, imho.

Myon has been untouched for ages and it begins to hurt it. Inability to whom grant passage bars people from events inside.

There are many other things not benefitting Myon and working against the settlement but it would be a lenghty post. Lets hope They find a time to re work it.

Also, Arelith forest is now among the ugly areas on server now (bar hidden valley and burial grounds).

People have really gotten spoiled if the Southern entrance portal near Heartwood is considered too far from myon and a reason elves never visit the city.

I can agree Myon could possibly use an update visually, maybe more housing...but they don't need a portal direct, I'm sorry, they have three portals, each 2 screens away, 3 screens for Stonehold, but still, It just seems really silly that they can't manage 2 screens.

Well, I wouldn't say Stonehold is Three Screens away...

Exit the city to Temple of Silvanus = Screen 1.
Exit Temple of Silvanus to Northern Crossroads = Screen 2
Exit Northern Crossroads to Termites = Screen 3
Exit Termites to Stonehold Ruins = Screen 4
Exit Stonehold Ruins to Stonehold Interior, Main Floor = Screen 5
Exit Stonehold Ruins Main Floor to Stonehold Ruins Lower Floor = Screen 6
Exit Stonehold Ruins Lower Floor to Stonehold Portal Spot = Screen 7.

Myon to Stonehold Portal = 7 Screens.

to Nexus Falls Source Portal

Exit the city to Temple of Silvanus = Screen 1.
Exit Temple of Silvanus to Northern Crossroads = Screen 2
Exit Northern Crossroads to Northern Edge Arelith FOrest = Screen 3
Exit Northern Edge Arelith Forest to Nexus Falls = Screen 4
((not technically a 'screen change', but long walk to the far side, or local ferry transition to Portal))
Optional Route to Behind Waterfal = Screen 5

Nexus Falls Source Portal = 4.5 Screens

Southern Shallow Wood Portal to Myon

Shallow Wood to pond = Screen 1
Pond to trail past ogre = Screen 2
Trail past ogre to Temple of Silvanus = Screen 3
Temple of Silvanus to Enter Myon = Screen 4.

all of which have certain levels of danger and encounters, compared to all other settlements, only Guldorand really puts danger between its nearest portal and the entrance to the settlement, and even that lets you spawn into a safe spot before necessarily getting into trouble, and the journey is literally one screen away... granted it's a twisty/long walk relatively speaking.

-so, not disagreeing with the statement that portals aren't far, but they are farther than you think.

Greater Gargoyles often spawn by the Stonehold and those can be really tough for low levels. There's also the occasional giant warband waiting by the Nexus Falls portal. You can notice how inconveniently placed these portals are for Myon when you are a low level yourself.

Vampires npcs with fear spells within too are in disfavor to low levels too. Aynone mentioned the random elder spiders ambushing low level characters? :D

The biggest downside is the missing ship, from other cities you can just jump on ship and sail anywhere but bendir.

RP is solution to many things. Why do we need weapons? We can just RP swinging our imaginary weapons and roleplay the damage, am I right?

Well actually you can, since most torture RP is done this way. So yes, you really can. That said, its not hard to find out about Myon, simply ask most elves about any elven settlements, initiate the RP, hunt around, look for kin, look for a group willing to take you there, or if your really bold, do the "adventurer" thing, and go explore.

That is a solution for finding out about Myon, not reaching it reliably so it may serve as a cultural centre for your race.
Characters: Izzy, short for Isabel. Shaena Ash.

There is another non-race restricted secret entrance to Myon. You just haven't found it.
