PVP: Auto hostile on attack(if not in party)

We will file suggestions here that did not make the cut. Don't expect detailed responses, but the most common reasons are:

  • implementing the suggestion is impractical, or too much work for the gain
  • the suggestion is thematically against our design philosophy
  • the suggestion is too detailed/low-level
Keep your suggestions broad and focused on RP benefits, please, not detailed suggestions of how to fix everything.

PVP: Auto hostile on attack(if not in party)

Post by Twily »

I think when attacking another player who has a "Neutral" status on the player list(and isn't in a party) they should be automatically "disliked".

This isn't to replace the dislike before PVP rule in any way, but to fix a problem I've been in many times. (see below for explanation on the problem, although not a part of the suggestion itself)

________________________________________________________________________________

I play a character who defends others. Many times now I've not known the dislike state between the attacker and victim and as such I don't have the attacker disliked at the time he goes to attack. I try to have the player list up and their name ready to click, but on a few occasions this wasn't possible and by the time I opened the list and found their name, the victim I planned to protect was already killed.

I had considered attacking before disliking them, and clicking dislike mid-fight, but this would be unfair to the attacker as they may have abilities they'd use that only target hostile people. The suggestion is to make this possible in immediate cases where there's no time to dislike first. Someone would still be able to be reported for not disliking first, but it would make the immediate PvP situation more fair(since mages have a number of spells that only target/harm hostile targets, things like curse song, etc) and whether or not punishment is given would be a case by case basis. I personally feel it would be very easy to spot people who try exploiting this and that this would be better than the IC result that happens as a result of mechanics getting in the way.

EDIT: In reply to DM Ironfist: That wasn't much of a choice either but thank you for the advice. There was about 5-10 other players present, 90% of which were not in a party with me, and many of which were low level. Even if I did manage to not auto attack one of the other players(one of which was using a bow so I'd have had attack of opportunity), my cleave could have badly hurt or even killed one.

In situations such as these, I recommend using the '!' command. It'll ensure you hostile the hostile with the touch of a quickslot.
