I never really understood why mundane jewelry and jewelry boxes were added in, and after a lot of thought, I still don't. I even had one of my suggestions shot down because there are "too many bags", and yet here we have a container, the purpose of which is to contain useless fluff which merely translates to gold and has the dubious benefit of not disappearing when you die. It adds as much to the game as the current food and water system, which is to say nothing.

The entire purpose of these could be replaced by gem drops, but I understand that those might become too easy to come by for crafters, and players might be reluctant to sell them for gold, hoping to use them instead.

Surely, there must be another way to accomplish the intended goal, which doesn't involve six wasted inventory slots and yet another tedious errand to run, upon returning to town. Honestly, the entire system feels superfluous, with the absurd amounts of gold that writs pay out. I, myself, would much rather have gold in hand, and risk losing it upon death.

Of course, the option remains to opt out of the system by not setting up auto-loot and not getting a jewelry box, but that means putting myself at a disadvantage over an entirely OOC inconvenience, rather than an IC choice.

Didn't it help in the past to have high appraise when selling jewelry? Maybe it's a bit outdated, but I'm not certain if affects jewelry anymore since appraise just modifies the max sell price which mundane jewelry doesn't get close to.

If the above is correct I can see why it was introduced. Maybe bringing jewelry back to the old appraise system should be considered to give weight to characters with appraise? Then again scroll sales are already pretty awesome with appraise.

It still does, but that's not enough to justify the system, in my mind. It's a time sink that contributes nothing to RP, beyond "Hey, can you stand next to me while I sell this stuff, so I get your Appraise bonus?"

Further, it requires that you buy an expensive and sometimes difficult to acquire piece of equipment, just so that you can benefit from the system without filling up your inventory and getting a repetitive stress injury when you sell it all off.

As a jeweler and enchanter my character finds it tremendously valuable for rp and convenience to have lots of potential items ready to use.

My only question is why it’s so damn huge!

Hang on, TMR, just to be clear, you are complaining about something that you believe is a superfluous, unneeded, time wasting errand that is unnecessary to use, but will not stop using because other people might gain an advantage over you for spending that time (and inventory slots), and want it removed for everyone instead?

That's a very adversarial and accusatory way of putting it, and I'm not complaining in the way that your tone suggests, but yes I believe that the jewelry/box system is unnecessarily bloated. The point of it is to give low level players a source of income which isn't lost upon death. I'm suggesting that there must be a more elegant way of achieving that goal. Not a removal, but a replacement.

Because i've found they're a HUGE time saver and saves a ton of inventory space. The jewelery drops have been around forever, so i'm not sure why they wouldn't be around? The argument of "its gold that doesn't drop on death" is applicable to every other last piece of loot as well, so...still lost here.

Still...confused? 6 inventory slots is the same as 3 amulets or necklaces, which, again, makes a jewelery box a huge inventory space saver. And you have to run back to town to sell any loot you find anyhow, as well as restock on supplies. So....again, I'm lost. Can you maybe reword or elaborate what the issue is?

It was meant more as poking fun than adversarial, but whatever, right?

I actually agree with you, but not for the reasons you posted. Its a derelict loot system, honestly. Let me make a statement.

"Jewelry sellers give you a pseudo random amount of coins when you talk to them after grinding. Change my mind."

With the boxes, we dont interact with the jewelry. Auto-loot picks it up for us, we talk to a vendor to sell it all at once. We never even see it. Hell, the boxes reduce their weight to almost nothing, so we don't even feel it.

Jewelry is a removed feature, but we have somehow kept the "good parts."

Mundane jewelry drops were massively increased as a way to give adventurers extra income that was safe from death. Jewelry boxes were added to address the clutter created by the jewelry drops. A problem was created by an added feature, which added nothing significant gameplay or RP-wise, and instead of removing the problem, a bulky and annoying "solution" was added alongside.

Yes, the jewelry box only takes up the space of three necklaces, but you wouldn't have very many pieces of jewelry in the first place, if the drops hadn't been increased. Jewelry was not always this common. Now, it's one of the primary sources of income from loot, next to scrolls. Scrolls serve a purpose. Gems serve a purpose. Equipment loot serves a purpose. (sometimes...) Jewelry does not.

It doesn't feel like a problem to most, because we're all so accustomed to it, but I see it as fluff that could be replaced by something else, for a more streamlined experience. The same goal could be accomplished by ditching the jewelry, increasing gold drops, and allowing characters to retain a percentage of their gold when they die.

I just don't see it creating any RP or adding any flavor to the environment, so why keep it?

This I would be fine with too, since gems stack and can easily be sold and there is not a huge time sink involved to get the coin.

But as long as there will be loose jewelry on corpses, I will hope there will always be jewelry boxes as well. In my 13 years on the server, those have been one of the greatest QoL I have seen!

Do gems automatically get put into a bag? I think they do, or they're dropping less. How will the collector differentiate between their gems and the gems they found on the current adventure?

As a hoarder of gems (and I do mean hoarder) this would be more a nightmare than simply keeping my 3x2 jewelry box.

I feel like this would solve nothing - there's still no extra rp or framework involved, and it would penalize anyone who invested in appraise.

I'd be down to see jewelry removed in favor of slightly increased gold drops - but only if there was a commensurate increase in the drop rate of scrolls. Alternatively, something like the Search bonus loot system could be implemented, checking against the highest Appraise score within 30m within your party to generate a small sum of bonus gold when a body is first looted. Either way, any swap from sellable items towards more hard currency dropping should involve some love being given to those who have invested heavily in Appraise.

And it doesn't necessarily have to be gems. Could be scrolls, gold, or even crafting supplies. I just would like to have it tie into other things, rather than being this insular system, sitting off to the side.

Scrolls or crafting supplies that can be sold to NPC merchants would be preferable. Appraise doesn't give you any benefit when selling gems - so that bonus 10-30 gp (plus the increased maximum sale price) per item that you would have gotten off of selling the jewelry ends up being lost.

It doesn't sound like a ton of lost value, but when you end up selling soooooooo much jewelry over the course of your character's career, the value you lose from not having something that scales off appraise really adds up.

I'm aware this gets brought up about practically everything, but hear me out here: Immersion. I always laugh a little bit when I find a really powerful scroll on a guy I just killed, because I can't help but think, "Wow! If you'd have used this, maybe you wouldn't be dead, stupid!" Likewise, I feel like jewelry makes sense to find on corpses alongside gold and equipment. Because why wouldn't this random bandit I'm killing have some shiny bling to show for his ransacking? Even if it's inconvenient to players because of the limited inventory, it just makes sense to me that you'd find that stuff on the corpses you're looting for valuables. Jewelry is believably among the valuables you'd find while looting.

Yeah, I personally like the jewelry box system. I wish it was a 4-slot item instead of a six, but I don't think about it that much~ I like that it's a way of shifting more gold to appraisal chars too.

I play this game to have fun.
Inventory management is anti-fun. Areliths removal of containers and magic bags (in a high magic setting) has magnified this problem, despite the lovely changes to carrying capacity.

I am in favour of removing jewelry.
I am in favour of having jewelry boxes being sold by NPCs, or given to new characters on start, to make the looting and selling experience smoother.
I am in favour of allowing appraise checks to influence gem prices.
