Pathfindering Fighters

Post by Harkath »

Let's play catch up, using fighters from a better version of 3rd edition.

2 changes:
1. Bravery. Fighters gain a bonus to will for every x fighter levels they possess.
2. Weapon training. Divide up weapons into weapon groups, whenever a fighter gets a feat for any weapon out of this group, it applies to all of them. Weapon groups are, let's say, Light blades (rapier, short sword, dagger, etc), Heavy Blades (bastard swords, longswords, greatswords, etc), Axes, Blunts, Exotics, Ranged

Caveat: This should kick in at like, 11 or so, or scaling like the monk feats do now. Maybe a nice lil capstone at 20 fighter would be good. Something to encourage having majority fighter levels.

I think you might be underestimating the importance of the 3 AC you gain by 15th fighter level, the +1AB you get at 23rd fighter level, and the soft str (or dex) bonuses, which make it more possible to take saves on gear.

The capstone already exists.

I feel like some boons that aren't related to damage or AC are what they could really use now.

For example, maybe at a certain level, they get to choose a path, sort of like the (PD)Knight prestige class. I feel like the Knight class' theme is that of a leader, though. One who takes charge in a fight; being a student of war. So the following themes are going to be more self focused, so as to not step on the Knight's toes.

Multi-classing shouldn't be left out with these perks. Especially because of the aforementioned Knight class, the concept mixes too well with the usual Fighter concept, so I'd keep the triggering level no higher than 22. So let's say 22, the next transition the Fighter goes through triggers a dialogue box that reads:

Champion: They get the Epic Reputation feat, which is linked to the same perks that the Noble award grants. Therefore suggesting that the fighter, be it through honorable display or bloodthirsty conquest, has somehow come into their own, and forged a reputation for them self. On top of that, maybe an additional +5 to the skills that Epic Reputation benefits (bluff, intimidation, persuasion, taunt). Not really any combat advantage here, just some fun RP perks. Maybe it's a mercenary who has made a name for them self. Maybe it's a stalwart warrior praised for the timely defense of their lord and lands. Just something to enhance the experience. Mechanically, this will appeal most to those who want disguises or enjoy using Taunt.

Quartermaster: Your have a keen mind for battle, and are hard to catch by surprise. Give them Uncanny Dodge. It's somewhat combat oriented, yes, but not offensively at least. Either they were going to multi-class dip to get Uncanny Dodge, or they were never going to have it and suffer. No harm in offering it now. Also give them +1 mundane dweomercrafting tier. This will greatly help those who want to role-play as being master smiths, creating the most fabled of armaments, without having them sacrifice any feats from the usual fighter builds.

Eldritch Knight: Eldritch Knight is one of my favorite archetypes, though it becomes a little hard to replicate here on Arelith without stepping on another class' conceptual toes. My thoughts are maybe a big spellcraft buff for bonus vs saves, representative of some loose understanding of magic giving them extra defense--or--maybe a smaller buff to spellcraft and immunity to Disarm, like 5e's Eldritch Knight. Maybe a mix of bonus spellcraft and lore? I'm really not sure, but the tools are definitely here to support it. Just a question of what the Dev team thinks is balanced.
