Basicly I hate the "optimisation" element everyone seems to crave of having to have umd and discipline for a build to be viable this takes away from the role play element in place of power building.
My idea is to disable the ability to put any ranks in to the umd skill and implement something similar to the language system where by using progressively more potent magic items you start to learn how to use them and in turn each time you do your skill rank maybe increases slowly over time.
This feels more role play based if you want it you learn it perhaps with a chance of something going wrong if you are not skilled enough and try casting a high level scroll or something.
