Monk weapons and flurry of blows.

Post by Dreams »

It seems like flurry of blows randomly works with some monk weapons and not others. Is this intentional?

Flurry works with Unarmed, Kama, Katana, Club, not with Quarterstaff.

RP only starts at 30 if you're a coward.

Partially intentional. I think its not supposed to work with katana as well. But qaurterstsff is intentional. You still get lots of attscks without the single bonus attack from activating "flurry" which also gives a - 2 to all your attacks. Agaisnt higher ac opponents, flurry is usually a poor choice to use.

Intentional.

- Quarterstaff is now a double-sided weapon, like the double-axe and the two-bladed sword. Like other double-sided weapons, its STR damage bonus is 1.0x for the main hand and 0.5 for the offhand attacks. It is affected by Weapon Finesse. It benefits from monk's UBAB progression, but it cannot be used with Flurry of Blows.

This means the quarterstaff, in addition to granting 1-2 extra attacks off the base monk progression, also benefits from the 2-hand attack bonus. So not only do you get the extra attacks, but at an increased AB. To give them an extra attack at -2 AB from flurry of blows, now comfortably offset by the +2 AB 2-hand bonus, would simply be granting them a possible third extra attack for free.

Incidentally, Malcom, and I'm not trying to be pedantic here, but you (and others) have been spamming the forums about monk weapons and their perceived imbalances. They fill radically different roles. Quarterstaff can be more damaging than a katana on certain builds, and even yields perhaps the highest DPS in the game...at least on one particularly egregious example.

Quarterstaff and kama are the stand out dual-wield choices, which are each situationally better than the other on certain character types and/or builds.

Katana is the stand out single-weapon choice. Club is niche, but can be situationally worthwhile due to some creatively outstanding clubs attainable in the module (on-hit stun anyone?).

Unarmed is, of course, unarmed...and nothing else has the base damage nor the use of stunning fist + quivering palm thrown in on top. (Though it would be neat to see something done with the heavy-handed EE stunning fist nerf.) The new monk gloves make unarmed an even more viable choice.
