Kenku Race Suggestion

We will file suggestions here that did not make the cut. Don't expect detailed responses, but the most common reasons are:

  • implementing the suggestion is impractical, or too much work for the gain
  • the suggestion is thematically against our design philosophy
  • the suggestion is too detailed/low-level
Keep your suggestions broad and focused on RP benefits, please, not detailed suggestions of how to fix everything.

Kenku Race Suggestion

Post by Scraps »

Hey. Scraps again!

This time offering up a race suggestion!

- Kenku!

https://gyazo.com/7d792c3cfb5e6681f0283173373bdf07

They're a diminutive race of crow-themed humanoids. Mostly known for their adept mimicry and having a well deserved reputation for thievery. They're common in cities and urbane environments, typically living in small communities in alleys and slums. [1]

Kenku could work well as a Surface Race, an Underdark race, or both. Certainly I'm sure surface players might enjoy another race not confined to the Underdark. Kenku can be found throughout southern Faerun's cities [2] and because of this find themselves an easy pick for a Cordor start.

Kenku actually have a lovely model that looks like it's pulled directly from the sourcebook, credit to Ryuujin for his amazing work. I'll post it here >https://staticdelivery.nexusmods.com/mo ... 021728.jpg<for you to look at.

As for racials, as per MM3 Kenku are a -2 STR +2 Dex Medium sized race, standing at roughly 5 feet. Though they had hollow bones and were exceptionally light for their size.

In addition to their raw stats, they had:
The ability to mimic any voice they were familiar with (Though this didn't allow them to speak languages they were unfamiliar with).
When flanking a target, would gain +4 AB as opposed to the normal +2.
And had a +2 racial bonus to Hide/Move Silently [3]

Obviously there's no requirement to translate it's racials over at a 1/1 setting. But I do think it's important to post them to somewhat explore the flavor of the race. I can understand if their Mimicry would need some sort of change, because as written it could be a real pain to implement.

Okay, that's my pitch! Please consider adding Kenku, they're a (in my opinion) really cool and flavorful race. And have had an absolutely beautiful lore-friendly model already made by a really talented fellow!

Now I'll drop the sources for all the stuff I was saying earlier. If curious to look it up yourself, all the linked information can be found in Monster Manual 3 for third edition!

It's a fantastic model, and I plan on using it extensively in upcoming updates, but not to have it as a PC race.

For one thing I just like the idea of not having PC variations of every such monster, and for another I don't think I'd like much of the associated 'Look, I'm a bird!' RP.

I might change my mind in future, but for now...

Rejected.
