Race Awards - what if...

Post by Apothys »

Just a thought really.

But wouldnt it be nice to have access to those cool races without having to wait years of rping only to keep failing a 5% roll?

I understand they are rewards, but what if they were accessible but they had a Mark of Destiny/dispair or something similiar to it. Meaning that they would eventually die off after 10 lives. You could hide it behind a RPR as well to assure that not just anyone can waltz in and take them.

Obviously earning rewards normally would mean you could do so without the mark.

Like i said just a thought...

No thank you. Even with the enforced scarcity of the 5% Arelith often feels like a zoo with all the dragons, half dragons, vampires and other assorted exotic beings running around. Often roleplayed like humans with added snowflake features to make matters worse.

Three problems with this on it's own.

1) We do mean to keep these races scarce. As the below poster pointed out.
2) We want to encourage a good turnover of characters and resources, which the hope of a 5% does.
3) We have to walk a narrow line between making sure these races are actually well rped, and yet allowing them in theory to be avaiable to all, or most people. There's plenty of detractors for the RPR system as it is, and whilst I myself am a big fan of it, I'll be the first to admit it has it's issues. Locking races entirely behind RPR tokens tends to engender a sense of bitterness and elitism (more so because you can tell at a glance who has that coveted 30rpr or 40 rpr, they're the ones playing the Vampires ect).
This too shall pass.

(I now have a DM Discord (I hope) It's DM GrumpyCat#7185 but please keep in mind I'm very busy IRL so I can't promise how quick I'll get back to you.)

My only real issue with things is the way the reward system is now it really just encouarges speed lvling delete, get reward, speed lvl, delete, get reward etc until someone has plenty of rewards in reserve.

I also would drop most the races 1 reward lvl. Why does a hobgoblin or forest gnome need a reward. These seem like they should just be regaulr playable races. Ogres should be normal.

I keep hearing this as a fear. Yet, I would like to know, are people actually doing this? Because, if Major Award is your goal, right now...without Dev permission...what you can play is a pixie or an RDD.

Maybe its just me, but I wouldn't even attempt to burn multiple epics in an effort just to play a pixie or a standard HoTU PRC. I would also assume the Dev control and the RPR requirement similarly discourages this sort of tactic.

Though I don't disagree about your current tier assessment.

Most reward races don't need approval., so it's not a lot of effort to simply stockpile rewards so you can be ready for any new races. Or even if needs an application then you have the rewards, so if say dragon comes back you are ready to apply. I think it s waste of time to get into rp then suddenly delete when you hit a certain level. If there was something special you wanted to play you need to try for those major rewards. But with special requests a no right now, I guess there is less incenitive.

Well, The issue is Automation VS control.

DMs can't be everywhere, all the time and the population is rather large. The idea is nice for 5%, however it dose indeed create a requirement to "burn" a character, and if you fail, you try again.

The flip side is DMs need to be Sauron and go around, watching RP, or reading logs and generally being bored. New issues will come of that that I am sure are present today being, they aren't going to follow around a new player for a week watching them RP. They are going to be drawn to the hubs of attention with experienced and entertaining people. If by chance sempi notices you as you pass though, or are drawn in, you might get a level up in RP rating, however after months I never got noticed by anyone. (Not a crack at one one, it's just the nature of the beast)

My point is, I think rewards should be given to active players from time to time in a more controlled way, and less focus put on the requirement to burn a character. I wouldn't cast my favored character to the pit so easy, however I would level something I don't care for up and toss him on the alter without a 2nd thought.
