As an expansion of this suggestion.
I certainly liked from other servers this:
Concerning the UDers in the surface:
As the UD ppl had infravision and dark vision and they may see in the UD as if there were daylight... When exposed to the Day Light they get automatically blind (and this last for a long long time, untill they got their eyes adapted, which may happen never in some cases.
Mechanical/visually, the UD player blinded gets a black screen, and all the penalties of a blind one unable to see anything.
Also, drows exposed to the surface lost their SR.
UDrs exposed to light spells may suffer a small penalty.
Note that the light penalties will slowly vanish during the night time in the surface, while if they go to the surface during the night, nothing will happen to them, but also a slighty penalty cause the reflected light of stars and Moon.
Concerning the Surfacers in the UD:
The opposite... When they go into the UD, the darkness is as deep than only with spells and/or feats to see in darkness they could catch something...
In Arelith, this may work as giving all who hadn't dark vision a penalty as if they were blind and darkening their screen aswell.
Also, the UD should be more dangerous for surfacers as with plenty traps and creatures who may attack more often any non underdarker than to an underdarker.
