Food/Drink Emotes should work like equipment

Post by Apokriphos »

I would like for drinking and eating food/wine in Arelith to broadcast the type of drink or food the character is enjoying. Currently your character takes an awkward pose and then *uses a special item*.

When a character uses a spell on an armor with a custom name it emotes the name of the armor. I believe the same should occur if a character drinks or eats. In real life it would be easy to tell what is being consumed but in Arelith it is nigh impossible. I would propose changing the on use function to act similar to custom armors. This would stimulate new RP opportunities and give players more ways to express themselves and their characters.

What does everyone think of this idea?

Oh, so .. like ..

If I have an item called "Apple Pie", and I use it .. It would say *Hazard's eats apple pie*.. ?

Personally I would rather keep it simple to things like eats/drinks or even just the animation because then it gives me more freedom to describe/emote what my character is eating/drinking and how.

Food/drinks in general could use some love.
Bar drinks do not have description, for example, and this is kinda disappointing.
Food is rather lackluster, there aren't many food items in the first place, and the game could use more variety of them.

So, some reasonable indication of the drink could be a good idea.

"Hazard devours apple pie with extreme prejudice. Onlookers watch in horror as the indescribably terrifying scene unfolds before their eyes. Some of them faint"
Another forum ban, here we go again.

in ye olden days (actually, just a couple years back) this was the case in rudimentary fashion. your character had a lil dialog pop up above their head that said *eats* and *drinks* whenever you did this, spamming chat windows. your solution is a little more elegant, it'd show up in the combat window as Dave Freeportal drinks Water but gets a little weirder when you have food items with names as long as a paragraph (because stacking causes descriptions to get wiped, often).

i'm not so sure this is as immersive as you reckon. food would probably also show up as Dave Freeportal uses Food Ration most of the time, and if people want to express themselves with what food they're eating, then they can emote it. you'd need to massively expand the host of food options to make this immersive, since "food ration" is meaningless and could be anything, but if i emote then it could be beef jerky, it could be a dense mineral-enriched nutrient slurry, it could be a human toe, or high-quality bendir cheese. it could also just be me staving off the food/water/rest system that more often impedes RP than enhances it.
