You get server message saying "your are preventing someone in your party from progressing "name of writ".
At which point it's kind of nice to leave so your not forcing them to repeat the place so they can complete the writ.

I don't know how big of an issue this really is outside of maybe the orclands and up in Minmir (maybe one day I will play a drow and learn the underdark, but for now its still a mystery to me!), but those are the only two locations I have ever run into this sort of situation.
