Kenku appreciation thread

Post by CorsicanDoge »

This is not to imply there's a silent majority that want their greedy bird boys. We just simply want to appreciate the kenku.

Fun D&D story: I accidently killed kenku at dark street corner in one of my D&D sessions because I thought it was wereraven from the Curse of Strahd. People were shocked that I killed it and I was like ”What the mole damn is kenku?!” with my gnome cleric. This was my very first encounter with kenku and I had never heard of them. :D

We need kenku to Arelith. Beast King welcomes them.

Based on every conversation I've heard, I don't expect Kenku to be a playable race, even as 5%s, in any foreseeable future. That being said, what fantastic creature models. +1 Appreciation.

Done.

Imagine breaking into a Dissian mansion. You've heard that the mother of all 5%s is in the chest of this player hosue and not in a citizen storage and it has, like, 5 5% so it's really a 0.125% and you and your 30 bard friend break in. You get past the epic trap two cells from the door, bash a fixture, and then head into the second floor. All of the sudden the face of death approach is next to yours and you see six other crow-creatures all around you.

One has a club in one hand and all you hear is the following:

While I very much like the model and plan to use them extensively for NPCs and hostile mobs I'm reluctant to add them as a PC race.

I find anthropomorphic races the epitome of lazy design and that they lend themselves to crass, unimaginative roleplay. I've wanted to move gnolls away from a normal race for this very reason, and I really wish kobolds looked less like adorable puppies.

I've no doubt Kenku roleplay would quickly dissolve into a 'let's pretend to be birds' club, because really? That's all the race is in most people's eyes.

Yeah, it's pretty unfortunate. The lore on kenku is pretty nice to roleplay but we all know that there would be at least one particular type of roleplay to come from up if it was used as a normal. It's hard to deny this even if my personal bias would really enjoy playing a murder, klepto bird that somehow work together in a flock because the fluff says they work together.

My one encounter with a Kenku on Arelith I tried to stiff them for 1 gold and it beat me half to death in the street. 10/10, Great Race.
