Thar Be Treasure Buried In These Hills!

Post by McPunchins »

I made a suggestion on the suggestion board with the same subject here

When discussing how to promote it Spyre pointed out the feedback forum on the discord so I'm making a post here for people to provide their thoughts on this idea to hopefully draw more attention to it. There have been a few who have already expressed interest in this but perhaps it needs further refinement and discussion.

I have set up a straw poll here to allow people to simply vote on their opinion and replies with further thoughts are also welcome.

I look forward to reading peoples thoughts.

I suppose some further information here might also help.

Essentially the suggested idea is to create player made fixtures in the form of boxes or chests that can be buried with a shovel to create a one time use dig location hidden in the world. This could be used for a plethora of things from temporary scavenger hunt events or geo caching to hidden treasures or supplies for characters. The digging system already on the server is a neat mechanic and I feel like this is one piece that is missing from what is already present.

All for this.

I have long wanted to play a PC Faerie Dragon pickpocket, who would roam around indulging his curiosity into what people are hiding in their bags, then, upon finding out, would just squirrel the items away somewhere and forget about them.

Granted the Faerie Dragon part is unlikely to come to fruition, but it could be fun for someone else.

Not to mention a great way for people to run scavenger hunts/leave a trail of clues/set up drop boxes for kidnapping payments and the like.

I like this.
"Moradin's will! I ask ye, wish not one Dwarf more!
By Clangeddin, I am nae covetous for gold,
Nor care I for comely lasses!
Such outward things dwell not in my desires.
But if it be a sin tae covet honour,
I'm th' most offendin' soul alive!"

I like it, but I also worry about system resources and such.
People burying a ton of chests all over the place or filling chests with enormous amounts of... stuff eating up RAM, etc. Maybe a time limit so it doesn't just accumulate... forever?

Also, perhaps there should be random treasure quests generated on the islands you can sail to? You get a map in high-level loot areas, then use it (somehow) to sail to one of the islands and find a chest with actual GOOD things in it? Something like that.

I would imagine there would be a way to limit the amount of chests and items a player can have buried by adding a variable on the database information for them that states who it belongs to and if you have too many chests buried you just get a notification saying you have too many chests buried or a warning with a verification of a second attempt that it will delete your oldest chest after a certain point. In theory each chest could also be limited to like a stack of items or two so that people aren't burying 20 items in 10 chests because hauling a full sized chest out in the middle of nowhere would be a pain in the rear end so it is more likely it'd be smaller boxes. But I see your concern and it would definitely need to be something considered in the process of making such a thing happen.

Deaddrops, there is another option I hadn't thought of.
