Re: Remove the fish-skin for weapons
If we so much worry about immersion, let us roll all the short lived races like humans, goblins, kobolds and halflings that are more ancient than elves yet keep living.
Keep the fish, put DM on those who abuse it beyond silly.

Re: Remove the fish-skin for weapons
I remember that the first character my character met was a halfling wielding a fish, who was roleplaying that she was eating it. It gave me such a heart-warming and iconographic impression of the server.
The fish, like many other things, is a tool for roleplay, that can be used positively or not. Taking it away will add nothing to the server, quite literally. If you are concerned about immersion being broken, report the player who breaks the immersion, not the tools he uses.

Re: Remove the fish-skin for weapons
Never really had PvP with a fish user. but i see mages use it as off hand weapons and smaller races just using it as a general weapon to kill dragons and trolls with.Petrifictus wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2020 4:53 pm Hands off from our fishes. Those overserious players who want to take away fish are most likely those who got beaten by the fish.
i do however got inspired by some of the replies.
perhaps a overhowl of the fishing system.
if a new weapon group was made... called "fish".. and the club skin was moved there. (can't take weapon focus in it of course)
the weapon group can't be enchanted and have one charge before it break (can't be repaired either)
only way to get a fish weapon is by.. you guessed it.. going fishing.
you can turn it in at a settlement for a nice profit as food, and it's rare that you catch it in rivers and lakes.
That way you can still have silly fish fights but without it being a dragon-slayer tool of doom and destruction.

If we're so worried about immersion, why do we have a food/water/rest meter but no poop meter.Seekeepeek wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2020 5:36 pmIs this a Strawman Fallacy?Petrifictus wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2020 4:20 pm If we so much worry about immersion, let us roll all the short lived races like humans, goblins, kobolds and halflings that are more ancient than elves yet keep living.

Fools! everyone knowings that wielding a life force, live or undead fish, is a powerful and potent weapon in the realm of magic!
Re: Remove the fish-skin for weapons
...we got mages that can rain hell at ppl, burst out volcanos, summon dragons, and etc.
we have ogres, liches, many other magical beings.
i think that making a club that looks like a fish, or doing anything with a fish shouldn't be beyond our reach.
but honestly - don't expect to be treated seriously if you walk with one for extended period of time

Re: Remove the fish-skin for weapons
I think that's it really. You have massively powerful beings capable of all kinds of magical feats and potentially involved in all manner of stories... then they whip out a fish in a rather cliched attempt at quirkiness. I find it very difficult to engage seriously with any 'intelligent' creature doing that, simply because it doesn't fit with the rest of their background. I can't think of any compelling, well-written villain from fiction that behaves like that. Quirkiness or eccentricity needs to be a portrayed a little more originally.Naghast wrote: Tue Oct 13, 2020 12:57 pm ...we got mages that can rain hell at ppl, burst out volcanos, summon dragons, and etc.

It's not against any rules particularly and people can RP how they want, but I think it's important people are aware of the impact it can have on others willingness to engage with their PCs.

Re: Remove the fish-skin for weapons
D&D definitely is for all sorts of folks. I have always preferred gritty realism fantasy and play my characters accordingly for the most part. Some don't. However, WYSIWYG is a core philosophy for our group here & if I'm seeing a burning fish beat a man to death- well. It's juvenile.
Re: Remove the fish-skin for weapons
How does someone killing someone with a fish effect you more than someone killing a dragon with a dagger? Or a mere fighter surviving a hell ball that exploded on top of them? Or the fact that clubs can be made completely invisible and still used as a weapon/wielded IG?
Play the game, have fun, don't let a fish ruin it for you.
Edit: The fish can easily be justified many ways in game. its a wood/metal carving made to look like a fish. Why would someone do that? To humiliate their foes, to make their foes drop their guard because they are simply wielding a "fish". Even IC accounting for WYSIWYG it does not look like a proper "fish" no fish is that stiff and rigid.

Counter-point re: Immersion.
I find it more immersive that some lunatics have fish they hit people with than everyone is deadly serious all the time. The real world has comedy and tragedy so a fictional world ought to have some too.
If I can deal with the harrowing reality of slavery and the psychological damage it can do being a major RP point, y'all can deal with the weirdness of me having a fish that casts charm person because I'm RPing that it ate the wand.
EDIT: Additional- even in the Forgotten Realms this kind of goofery has happened so it's not even in defiance of canon.

It doesn't really effect me. I tend to ignore these types of people. I'm not interested in gag roleplay.mjones3 wrote: Wed Oct 14, 2020 6:47 am How does someone killing someone with a fish effect you more than someone killing a dragon with a dagger?

Re: Remove the fish-skin for weapons
The fish skin is really stupid and silly, but as Ork says it's not hard to avoid lowbrow meme RP if that's not what you're looking for. Not sure why this model still exists (or the ridiculous tree skin for the great club that's literally just a gigantic graphical glitch), but in a way it is kind of nice to have what's essentially a hand-held warning sign reading "trying to roleplay with me is a waste of time."
