I've always felt like this extra time would not merely result in proficiency with weapons sorcerers will never actually use in melee, but also in the opportunity to master a skill or two while wizards are busy studying - and yet, wizards are often the ones with too many skill points to spend. A non-human sorcerer that wants stealth skills in addition to other absolute essentials needs 18 INT, for example.DnD 3.5 SRD wrote:Since sorcerers gain their powers without undergoing the years of rigorous study that wizards go through, they don't have the background of arcane knowledge than most wizards have. However, they do have more time to learn fighting skills, and they are proficient with simple weapons.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to give them one or two extra skill points per level, to represent the lore aspect above and partially remedy the skill point starvation the class is suffering from.
