Greater Sanctuary works?

Post by torugor »

Yesterday i tried using greater sanctuary to evade a battle. But i noticed it didnt work at all.

People can still hit me on greater sanctuary as if it wasnt there
So what is the point of this spell if it doesnt work for the only thing its supposed to.

I cast great sanctuary...dont do any more actions and attacks still bypass it.

I have the record of the battle here if dms need. But i want to know if more ppl have the same issue with that spell.

It doesn't appear to have been explained so I'll attempt to tell you what is happening here, though the redactions make it a little unclear.

Greater Sanctuary doesn't make you invulnerable. It makes you untargetable. In many cases this is the same thing, but there are some exceptions - usually AOE spells and attacks.

1) Whirlwind - this is what I'm seeing in the screenshot. The character simply ran to where they saw you last (or still see you if you weren't set to hostile), and performed a whirlwind attack. I haven't experimented with this in ages but I think whirlwind will completely disable your sanctuary which is why it appears you probably died seconds later.

2) Someone used a greater spell breach too, and I don't think that's AOE in Arelith, but it appears to have been timed in such a way that it could still have gone off at the exact time sanctuary did. Gsanc is number 14 on the breach list and can easily be stripped by a greater breach depending on how many wards your character had at the time.

3) Mordenkainen's Disjunction IS an AOE breach and capable of breaching Gsanc if you're nearby in the same way as whirlwind.

Usually it's highly advised to immediately retreat or relocate somewhere very far from your last location after using it because many players are quite aware of how to counter Gsanc.

So we're very much on track.

GS doesn't hide toons from non-hostile targets.

"!" before GS.

being hit by ww attack won't take you out of gsanc, but can hit you if you're in it

if someone starts using a gbreach scroll on you before your gsanc fires off, it'll continue to cast regardless and breach the gsanc

also it only makes you invisible/untargettable by hostiles

just seems like everything that could go wrong did go wrong for you in this instance
