So as I have turned 24 today I went spent some of my birthday money on something emblematic of my ongoing adult responsibilities, and bought a bunch of tiny plastic men.

This is important as a reference for me.



I will be posting my shoddy, awful, unpracticed progress here as an archive and personal reference. Also, to show off my disposable income.



The first of many. These take longer to assemble nicely than I thought, what with all the god damn filing down of the sprue edges and things.

Yet man things think they so clever about Storm of chaos yet it was us ratmen who captured their precious chosen of sigmar **cough* *cough* Scimitar also played empire and well I hated empire with a passion, so it was fun seeing my skaven war machines out shoot his own artillery. *plays Skaven, Bretonians, Lizardmen, and Greenskins* Surprisingly NOT chaos period albeit for 40k am still slowly working on my thousands sons army.

They're called that because, in 14th-16th century firearms terminology, "gun" was a catch-all term for any weapon that used gunpowder to propel a projectile, as opposed to an explosive or incendiary weapon. Weapons described as guns ranged in size from personal weapons to seige pieces like the Dardanelles Bombard, a weapon capable of firing 63cm diameter projectiles. Handguns were simply those guns which could be carried and aimed by use of one man's hands (though a support fork was almost always needed).

That said, these guys are clearly not using handguns, even in the historical sense. Handguns were operated by touching a lit match, by hand, to an exposed firing hole. These weapons clearly have a trigger, which makes them a different category of weapon altogether.

The Dardanelles Bombard is the one gun that I would probably sleep with. Although Pumhart von Steyr, Dulle Griet and Schwerer Gustav (not medieval) are close.


The Sick Man of Europe has some p sick artillery.

Thanks for that explanation. The sniper looking dude's weapon is called the Hochland Long Rifle, so the word is plainly used in-setting. Meaning that Games Workshop just dunno what the hell they're doing, as per usual. I'm calling them riflemen and nobody can stop me

THIS monster is apparently the Dardanelles Gun, which was used to breach the walls of Constantinople- and also, 500 years later, it was used to shoot at British warships with equal success.


Schwerer Gustav, Nazi Germany, WW2. The railway gun nobody ever knew was needed, and it also wasn't.

I loved so much to play Warhammer Fantasy and 40,000 back in the time... Missing the many friends I had in my PnP / Wargames Club in other city...

Alright, my first real attempt at painting Warhammer figures in like 6 years.

Idk. Half-done, maybe. This feels awful except I am only working with the starter kit's worth of paints- I need variety so I can properly do edge highlighting, better skin colours, and a fine detail brush. Gonna pick one up tomorrow...

Given he's only half done, he doesn't really need to fret yet. Constructive instead of curt, eh?
Thin your paints a bit - Lahmian Medium is great for that, better than water in my opinion - and for not painting for years, you're doing great so far! Practice practice practice. And yes, fine detail brushes are totally your friend, along with whatever they call Gryphonne Sepia now, and Nuln Oil, though on those sorts of models you want to be stingy with how much of the washes you use.
A good solid drybrush is also advisable, given the amount of highlighting you'll probably want to do to ensure that the shading stands out.

Okay so this guy's basically done because my skills cannot be improved by continuously assaulting a single, lone model. And so;


This chap exists, and has been basecoated thus far.

Progress is slow because I'm busy with work and, you know, this awful videogame called Arelith, but I of course found time to acquire eight more paints and two new brushes.

I've never really gotten into miniature war games like Warhammer but all those pieces remind me of army men that you get for cheap in buckets at the dollar store. I'm not sure if they are very common in Europe like they are in the US though.

How well would they be able to be painted?

I don't know but I was always pissed by them giving you an equal share of binocular guys as riflemen. As many grenadiers as machine gunners. As many bazooka guys as the dudes with walkie talkies. For Christ's sake just give me more foot soldiers than special ones. Ugh.

Those green armymen are fantastic. I once invented a turn based wargame using them. Assigning values and abilities to all the individual dudes. Good times.

The initial issue I see would be paint failing to stick to the models easily - they'd need primed with white or black (usually). After that, well, probably fine. The details will be atrocious and the moulding lines are hilariously obvious but if, for whatever reason you want to paint army men, it should be okay.

I find with cloth one of the best but easiest painting methods is to use a medium shade base colour, followed by a black or brown shade, followed by a drybrushing of a much brighter highlight colour. It's so easy, but gets cloth to a fair tabletop standard.
