Riding mounts indoors

Post by Dr. B »

I want to get a sense of what other people think of this. I don't know if something similar goes on in surface settlements, but personally I just think it looks asinine when I'm in the Hub and someone is riding around on a Nightmare, running from shop to shop, implausibly fitting through doorways and stairwells, as if this were completely normal. It makes me feel like this is an MMO and challenges me to take both the player and my surrounding seriously. Personally I think there should be a script in play that forces you to dismount when you're in an indoor area like the Hub. But that's just me.

Yes, it's dumb.

There is a script in place. Why you get off your horse in caves and most other buildings. This should probably go in the bug reports forum.

Most indoor spaces on surface dismount on entry. Then it turns to a henchmen under your control.

For the longest time there were no Horses in the UD, but nowadays you can ride one across transitions.

Hub dismount script not existing is an oversight and should be ammended. People may still bring their horse inside for the same reasons someone might not dismiss their summons; they want to use them in the future, but that should still be fine.

As someone playing a cavalier I have to say not being able to ride the horse in most dungeons is annoying and leads me to not doing the best dungeons just because I can't use the main class feature.

But yes I do think riding horses around indoors is awful, and it does sound like the hub is an oversight.

Is it because The Hub is one of the few inside areas you can portal into? I think the dismount script applies on doorways or similar transitions right?

Beat me to it.

But I sympathize with the argument the class needing to be playable moreso. I'd rather see riding be available in most areas and DM enforcement/RPR drops for the silliness and shopping trips.

The Theoden video is a false equivalence. He's riding the horse out of a stable. He's not riding around through throngs of bystanders, going to the bank and buying drinks, going up and down stairs and through tiny doorways, doing his day to day indoor activities, on a horse.

Horses in real life are freaking massive. I'm astonished every time I see one, because the movies come nowhere close to their sheer size and power through the camera. Frankly I can't believe ancient people thought it was a good idea to try and get on wild ones.

Anyway.

I haven't seen this much yet myself but I can easily imagine this being very shocking and annoying to see as described. Hopefully it's an oversight. My heart goes out to cavaliers, but I really don't think entering any densely populated settlement/area should be possible on horseback (though it would be super cool to use that lasso graphic to lead your faithful steed through the streets.)

Rural places like the logging town I think might be cool exceptions.

Wild horses are much smaller than current horses, which have been breed to be large.

Also, riding through city streets at a slow pace should be fine. Cities on the server are built for wagon travel and thus should handle a single horseback rider fine.

Finally, Cav has a lot going for it that sort-of makes up for not being able to use the core class feature in almost all epic dungeon content, including great feat access and fear immunity. However, it could use a touch to the on foot spirited charge to just give you a bit something. Maybe X% of the original damage from horseback applied when on foot.

However, that is a conversation for another thread and in reality, the Hub just needs the script applied to the portal transition so people are forced to dismount, though, a horse standing in the hub is almost as bad so maybe players needs to be just a bit more respectful as well.

I agree in spirit, but if the problem is that people are shopping and hanging out at the bar while mounted on a barded warhorse, or whatever, I don't think we can suddenly expect them to also be politely trotting through the streets like a normal self-aware person would.

If we're talking about the Hub, though, people are already doing their casual demonic rituals, undead reanimating, littering trash everywhere, chopping up bodies, summoning exploding cows for the luls, etc, so forgive me if I don't really have a lot of hope for any improvement in this area. Dare to dream I suppose.

Point taken on the wild horses though. I didn't think of that!

It works better as a expectations vs reality meme
