The Jungle

Post by Red_Wharf »

I feel like the Southern Peninsula Jungle is perhaps the most forgotten part of the server. It has a few cool things to it (such as the druid grove, the sacrificial pit, and a certain temple with a puzzle in it) but, overall, it is kind of lackluster despite all the untapped potential it has for more dungeons (as far as I know there is only a single one in it) and other places of interest.

I visited it with my monster character while exploring. And years ago with one of the last kensais before that. Definitely an interesting place with (perhaps) Chultan overtones, but because the area is fairly low level, and no route goes through it, there's rarely a need to go through it.

I think the area could see more traffic if the jungle portal was made two-way.

Actually there is a route through it but since you can just take the boat or use the portal nobody uses it.

People walk there only when they're doing a courier writ. And then they probably swear to never do this particular writ ever again.

In comparison, there's foot traffic between Cordor<->Tower<->Bendir and from bendir they reach Wharftown, Brog, Myon and Guldorand. Almost nobody goes through the jungle, and Peninsual requires a detour on top of that.

I agree its a great area, but I also kind of like areas that are sort of out of the way and must be 'unearthed' and explored in manner of speaking. The fact there aren't any dungeons or people blasting through with a horde of summons behind them gives it the jungle vibe in the first place IMO.

Not everything has to have a portal, or a writ, or some mechanical reason to visit. Sometimes things are just cool, adventurous, and I think this is one of them.

Thats' a good point.

But I still think it could make sense to make the dark heart portal two way.

I love the area as it is, being one of the best routes for those avoiding PC hunters etc as you can get to most places from there.

This would be way too much of a boon to certain property owning individuals right next to that portal.

I think this area is amazing frankly. Great resources. It is fun to circle grind for soft wood and pelts for settlements. There are some nice herbalism spots as well. The enemies are not overtuned at all for their level but they still occasionally kick out slow and hassle even a high level player. Could use a few more fishing spots but I wouldn't change a thing otherwise. Wilds are a good thing. Keep em wild.

Well, maybe you're right and nothing needs to be don about it. I wandered in there as an underdarker with no ability to create portals, so getting back home from there was a royal pain (didn't want to waste a lens either). Still, a nice area. Very atmospheric.

I don't disagree with anything you said, it's just that of all the areas in the server, the jungle is just kind of forgettable without much reason to go back to it after a first visit (how about a Maztican guildhouse somewhere?). I assure you that if Irongron ever decides to cut it away in its current state, barely anyone will miss it's gone and no one will be inconvenienced by it (yes, yes, I know the two druids who go to the grove in there would hate it, but you get my point).

I agree on this aswell, even the jungle could be larger, more dense and easy to get lost in (as a jungle would be) have lots of jungle resources (fruits, berries, etc) but still as Skibbles point out, untouched.. not Everything needs a reason to visit, some should be left for the exploring souls. Explore somerhing them self, and not because a writ demands you to go there...

Dormant Character: Tabitha Fuzzypaw - Shelved, searching all corners for treasures and secrets.
Misty Scrollsinger - Still searching answers, but is now elsewhere

Rolled Character: Björn Njald - sailed on new adventures

I would definitely miss it should it disappear though I admit I may not discover its absence for quite a while.

Places like that, among so many other places in the module (never change, Bridge of Want) that could be simply removed because they are low traffic, is where I bring many characters for adventure and RP. I may have seen it many times over the years, but that doesn't mean everyone else has.

It is a surprise nearly every time I bring someone new, to lesser tread paths, because there is no reason to be there other than to see it for what it is.

As a side note - I highly recommend Ranger roleplay. Arelith is enormous, and merely wandering around aimlessly can be incredibly fun with the right players at your side. You never know what you're going to find.

I agree, if the area exists why delete it? It's nice to go off the beaten path and high traffic areas can be a drag sometimes too. Knowing where the low traffic areas are is wonderful for playing something difficult like evil on the surface where you don't want to run into constant confrontation.

Plus I happen to like finding underplayed areas and trying to do something with them, it usually doesn't last but the potential is there.
