Mithril seems too rare

Post by Nevrus »

For heavy and medium armor wearers, there's a natural progression in gear from steel to mithril to adamant to class-gear.

However, this middle step seems to be regularly skipped. There's very little mithril gear in player shops compared to steel and adamantine. It seems to only be harvested as an additional component for some higher level gear. Why?

I think as we've expanded out the dungeon content, it's favored higher level content. Even before then, it was a vanishing rare metal. I can only think of one dungeon on the surface where it reliably spawns in the level range it's intended for, but I can tell you five sources of adamantine right now.

I think it should be more common in level 8 to 20 dungeons than it is right now. We don't need nearly as much greensteel as is available.

Personally I often skip mithril spawns unless I or someone I know explicitly needs it for a craft. Because, well, there's not much point to it currently. In the armor progression you can almost always skip right past mithril to the better alternatives and there aren't many other crafts that need it, and especially not in any large quantities.

With the several characters I've played, I only remember to get it several times in Skal.

What will do mithril precious, is that the armor made with it provided an increased dexterity bonus, like the one you can get for light armor with rogue levels.
And always feel strange for me, that the greensteel armors are the ones that provide reduced arcane spell failure and not the mithril ones.

But with the fighter I'm currently playing, I'll try to craft a mithril chainmail as soon as possible, because the bonus it provides will be good for him.

There is alot of +2 full plate and +3 half plate out there that renders mithril full plate kind of a pointless investment.
The shield's and helms are useful but thats about it.

When you do find mithril nobody buys it, because everyone apparenlty has a ton of it stocked somewhere.

For mithril based equipment, you'd normally need to find a blacksmith rather than trying to forge it yourself. Dedicated smiths often harvest all of it at any opportunity.

Not much point in buying/wearing mithril. Maybe if it's gifted to a low level toon, but otherwise I usually just skip it.

Maybe mithril could use a buff. Give it +2 uni saves and starts off runic or something, I don't know.
Something to make it actually worth making/using.

Heck, with mage armour, I usually go from bronze straight to my end game armour.

Mithril armor has weight reduction, which makes it more useful for an "armored mage" type of character.

Actually in Nwn2 it had an interesting property where a Mithril armor would have higher max dexterity bonus. So a mithril plate would have max dex bonus of 3 and not 1. That would effectively make it more useful than adamantine (adamatine would only grant DR)

you dont realize with all the writs and them being extended past 20 and then tweaked so that leveling to 30 can be done so easy in a short time, takes all non end game armors out of play.

we used to spend more time at mid teens so you needed the armor that fit that group, now its more likely to be found in an old family chest or a museum of this is what we used to wear.

What is going to be "end game" depends on what character you play.

For me so far, anything requiring ultra-rare ingridients (like mithril dust) was not worth pursuing. And in armored mage scenario I described, your end game can easily end up being a mithril plate due to weight.

Honestly, would pretty much prefer to have enchantment system expanded to allow tailoring of equipment rather than chasing all the arbitrary ingredients.
