Application Feedback

Post by Ruzuke »

My current topic of feedback is related to application feedback.

I received feedback on the application stating the topics I covered in an application was not mentioned in the application.

Things such as how he gained the skills, what he planned to do with the skills, and was suggested to play a different class that mechanically could not do the things attempted.

My request is that any feedback not be generic and tailored to the application. If I need to wait more than a week to hear a response bag (including two extensions of 48 hours then let me know why it was denied. It allows people to know what is happening and why.

I can definitely agree with this sentiment, the last time I made an application I had to go hunting individual DM's to get some actual feedback on what was lacking in the application, a laborious process that's really just turned me off anything that requires an application since then.

Applications for tokens can be a laborious project. They really privilege people who have experience writing to make a point. When I write an application I want to include:

-public CD-Key: http://wiki.nwnarelith.com/CD_key#Public_CD_key
-A list of past characters:
Character Name 1 (Log Used)
Character Name 2 (Log Used)
List as many as you like.
-concept: a short explanation of the character as a whole. I have used this:
An Antagonist. Maskarran Assassin. A dark robin hood, pseudo-Ur-priest, and sociopath. Thief of personality, divinity, and lives.
-reason for taking the restricted class: Why are you asking to play an Assassin (for example) rather than playing a Rogue.
-examples of how I plan to rp the class: Be specific here. Give ideas you have as to how you will RP your restricted class. Think 50RPR.
-show that I understand how the class/rp can be misused and that I respect the lore around the class. Don't be afraid to be specific here.
-brief backstory: Don't be too specific here. The DMs don't care about your mother's maiden name. They care about the overview.

The most important thing that I try to convey is that I want to make fun and engaging roleplay with the class or race I am requesting.

I think people sometimes don’t put enough effort into their requests. Look at it like a school assignment that you want to get an A in. Remember you are telling a story in a way that tries to convince people who read a lot of these applications that you should get to play the class. Write the app, edit the app, rewrite the app, ask a friend to look it over. Don't be afraid to reach out to a DM on Discord (if that's your thing, it's not really mine) and ask them what they look for in an application. Once you feel like you have something that is fun to read and gets your point across send it in and be very patient. Class and race applications can take a month to hear back from in my experience.

EDIT* Always read the wiki page of the race/class you are applying for. There is a section in each called Token Process

If you require more detail on why your app was rejected, you are always welcome to ask myself and I can look over the responses and get back to you.

A "Your concept fits another class more" rejection, which we hand out sometimes, means the concept you illustrate fits a different class better/just as well and the PrC seems invalid or only desirable for the mechanical traits. Assassins/Shifters/Harpers/Zhentarim all have thematic elements. If your concept illustrates the thematic elements of a druid/paladin/some other class instead, we will tend to say this and reject the application. Applications that really develop the character and how they come to be in their class tend to be more successful and avoid failing here.

As a special note it's important for assassins to show they understand how to make the assassin fun and engaging for their target and is an example we almost always ask for. Drawn out narratives tend to receive approval, while an example you can complete in five minutes likely not.

I also want to say being rejected does not mean you cannot try again. I've rejected an applicant as many as three times, before accepting their fourth application. Unless there is a prior concern (Inability to keep secrets for Harper/Zhentarim, recently playing a Harper/Zhentarim and creating another one right after the previous one is done, PvP issues for assassins, low quality RP), we are usually allowing applicants to apply again a few weeks later.

The end goal for me is either to approve it or help you in the right direction to get it approved next time.
Please don't feed my sister.
