Back in my day ...
So, with the 20th anniversary rolling around, I thought I'd start this thread and see where it ended up. It was inspired by some in-game lore discussion on the Brog discord. I'm young on this server, playing just around 3 years. Plenty of people have been here 7+ years. Others are brand new here. What I have noticed in 3 years here is how incredibly dynamic the server is and how much has changed thanks to the hard work of our Dev's, Dm's, and Admin volunteers. It is really incredible all that you have done and I think, for some of our new players, they don't know how it used to be. A chance to show contrast and reminisce if you will. I wanted to highlight these differences with a riff on the old addage "Back in my day ..." So the rules of the game:
1.) Begin post with "Back in my day ..."
2.) Highlight something that was different.
3.) No IG lore that is considered still secret or active (ie "Back in my day there was only 1 shadow plane door and now they are at places X, Y, and Z)
4.) Character histories and lore can be included but no dishing on individual players
5.) Keep it positive! This is about having fun. (If you get my thread locked by being a jerk, I will curse you with a voodoo doll of my own creation!)
I'll start:
Back in my day, when I first started on the server, dweomercrafting took 3 spell focuses in enchanting and that was the only way to get it. The result was that basin workers were pretty rare and had to be found. What was especially fun was seeing their work move around the island economy as most would provide descriptions, especially given the player investment in the role. You would see surface enchanters gear marked up in UD shops and vice versa. It was kind of a wild economy.
Your turn...

Back in my day..
Arelith was a low magic server, Wich I liked and was something that was progressing further by limiting the portals
Introduced caravans, Sadly with limits that made them less desired than I hoped for. But it was intresting.
Arelith now has some amazing new features in magic I absolutely love though. It's just me wondering what the other path had led to.

Back in my day, wearing heavy armor made you move slower. Being seen running at all was not a good look.

Back in my day, it was supposed to take, on average about nine months to level to 30
This too shall pass.
(I now have a DM Discord (I hope) It's DM GrumpyCat#7185 but please keep in mind I'm very busy IRL so I can't promise how quick I'll get back to you.)

Back in my day, Arelith was all one server and you'd see drow on the surface on the regular.

Back in my day, kobolds and other monstrous races started in Cordor. And later, Irongron played as the Tyrant of Urblexis Grond, and a svirfneblin.

Back in my day... Bendir was a fort.
-teleport was an ESF perk
Minmir was a lot more green and the manor was a lot smaller
Leveling to level 30 took 30000000000 hours

Re: Back in my day ...
Back in my day you couldn't teleport between servers, so places like Old Stonehold (it used to connect to the Underdark) and other Surface/Underdark server transition locations were very good places to run into trouble.
Re: Back in my day ...
back in my day, there was 1 server. it was always full. you had to spam the connect button to actually get a slot.

Back in my day, gifts, writs, adventuring XP, and even generated magical items didn't exist. We still had amazing RP and fun though
But you know what I miss most of all? No, not Light Keep (but yes that too).
The Rosewind Troupe! Nested right outside of Cordor, many fond memories were made there

Back in my day, when you hit level 20 it was time to go live in spirits and sibayad desert for a week or two

Back in my day, Arelith was novel for letting you play monster races from the start. And I played kobolds, kobolds, and ONLY kobolds.

Back in my day...
- The surface players got, like, 12 weeks of role-play out of having a market stall added to a bridge.
- Goblins put flags down - everywhere -
- Everyone rushed to Gamespy chat between resets...and it was obscene.
- Monks were broken

Back in my day . . .
There was no Shadow Wharftown, but it's return with orginal postings on boards led to great RP!
Oh, and the one who controlled the manor on Sencliff . . . Controlled the tiny isle!

Back in my day, Wharftown was a thriving fishing port with one of the most active trade hubs on the server. (And also the bestest luckiest basin ever)
Also back in my day, service guarantees citizenship patricianship, and I'm doing my part!
Cordor rules the seas!

Back in my day we didn't have the hordes of the underdark expansion yet.
Irongron wrote: [...] the super-secret Arelith development roadmap is a post apocalyptic wasteland populated with competing tribes of hand-bombard wielding techno-giants, and strewn with the bones of long dead elves.
So we're very much on track.

Back in my day...
- we had auto-hostile when you entered UD (as a surfacer) and vice versa
- you could only survive dungeons in a group
- the server was so low magic that a ring with invisibility 1/day was seen as a miracle of high magic
- the whole community was in the chat module after crashes (and it crashed frequently)
- the server/computer at JJJ's home had many problems (the game was not migrated into the cloud), see above crashes. Now server stability climbed to 24h where it was running just a few hours at best in one go before a crash in the past *thumbs up*
- the ugly mug tavern was a player-build tavern in the Cordor sewers. Below the tavern that got build on top of it and named after it afterwards
- many remarkable chars were vivid and alive and I had a chance to talk to, that are now awesome NPCs. Multicoloured hugs!

- The Cordor Bath House had to be removed because people kept having sex in it.
-"Borrowhome" was "Fort Bendir" and it only needed one guard; Stertigo (saw him kill a fire giant in a one-on-one)
-There was one server with a 65 player limit
-Benwick and the Mount Valtheran Stonehold weren't ruins.
-Masterly damask weapons were trash (+3 AB, +1 enchantment. I mean, seriously. The hell?)
-If you were crafting arrows, it spawned each arrow individually, and you had to pick them out of the forge one by one
-Grond kept going bankrupt because you could make 30k a trip selling food to the resource chest. Or you could just cheese it by walking 30 feet to the side to the food vendor, then selling the food you bought at a 50%-100% markup.

Out of curiosity, which npcs are we talking about? I've seen Dante, Stellen Varg, and Clarissa. Also, Megaliths drow-turned-into-a-golem in the old Udos- many remarkable chars were vivid and alive and I had a chance to talk to, that are now awesome NPCs. Multicoloured hugs!
