Maybe a free gift of wealth or some other incremental system would be better, if the coding isn't a nightmare. Something like 3k gold every level up. This would prevent people from repeatedly remaking to exploit the system.

Even without any actions taken to prevent this, I think the vast majority of players are operating in good faith.

The team has the capability to find exploiters. They will be banned and their account wiped if it was to happen. So I don’t think we need to do any further code changes and just put trust in our players to behave.

This is very easy to catch and we're actively going to be looking for it, so needless to say, don't do it.

On a related note, is it forbidden to give away all your gold/possessions to an in character friend before permanent retirement?

Not in a guldorand or level 8 start context, just after a few months of playing and throwing in the towel.

The loss of the ECL reduction awards really dinged non-surface starts that wanted the quicker leveling early.

Pardon my presumption but if you are going for rarity wouldn't it be easier to limit the number of rewards a player can receive to 1 per 4 months or something, so like 3 per year. Even without the -2 ECL, people are going to grind because they have the time to grind and because they can get a reward out of it. I think 4 months is at least appropriate for a character arc.

I think it's a stop gap solution as they work something out. It's my hopes that what you say is the foundation but with more nuances.
