Elemental Monolith should be lower on the WM table

Post by perseid »

I realize how at low levels getting the monolith could be a big advantage but for a leveled Wildmage the monolith exists largely to force me to rebuff all over again and very likely kills either my current Planar Conduit or my Mummy Dust configuration I had out beforehand. Even if I was already using an elemental, the monolith is still undesirable because rebuffing the new minion is more expensive than in times past and is unlikely to match the elemental type I chose for the occasion. The stats are fine for a WM 30 to -fate but outside that circumstance I find that it's not desirable at all as an rng outcome and if anything is more disruptive than actual "bad" outcomes because my only recourse is to hastily cast dismissal before the elemental can be called. It impacts more than just what spells need to be prepared too, if you've warded your minions already there's no reason to use the unlimited cantrips because spamming them could accidentally call a monolith to replace the minion you've selected already which will reduce your effectiveness a lot more than just not using the cantrips.

I would totally resequence my monolith. Losing mummy/conduit summons sounds poopish though. But mono really strong.

It's definitely fine in a vacuum imo but since the highest tier MD is gated behind ability activation not spellcasts and PC is... well PC... the interruption immediately necessitates either a rest or a change of plans. To some extent this would be lessened by being able to -stream configure the surge when it happens due to rng since then you could at least pre-stream a monolith with similar qualities to whatever it might replace.

I think this is currently exactly how it should be. Wild Mage had some massive benefits and also downsides. It comes down to the randomness of wild magic… I don’t really think wild mages should get even more control over random surges than they already have.

RP only starts at 30 if you're a coward.

This is why I suggested that it be lower on the table originally. Since the trend is generally that more desirable surges are higher and worse outcomes are lower.
