Racial Coloration Overrides

Post by Amateur Hour »

For anyone who's not made an elf in the last year or so, you may not know that the moment you pop into the Arelith entry it resets your skin and hair colors (from whatever you picked in the customization phase) to ones that are definitely lore-appropriate for your chosen subrace: bronze skin and blond hair for sun elves, pale skin and black hair for moon elves, etc. You can change this at the prismatic mirror, but it gives you an accurate starting point to work off of in case you haven't done elf lore research before making your new elf character.

Now that the system has been around for a while, I want to say that it appears to have worked extremely well. People are clearly still customizing in the Entry - not every sun elf has the same blond hair and bronze skin, for example - but giving people that suggestion to work off of has led to a much higher percentage of characters who fit within their subracial aesthetic. It's been a long time since I've seen a moon elf whose coloration looks like a sun elf or a wild elf whose coloration looks like a moon elf.

What would be even greater is if this were expanded to the other demihuman races. "We have the technology", for example, to gently suggest to a new player that gold dwarves aren't called gold dwarves because they're blondes...which, to be clear, I think is a very reasonable guess for someone to make if they don't have a firm lore background! The whole point of the elf color system was to get people on the right track even if they didn't do research beforehand, and earthkin can get that same advantage.

Rolled: Solveigh Arnimayne, "Anna Locksley"
Shelved: Maethiel Tyireale'ala, Lalaith Durothil
Current: Ynge Redbeard, ???

Thanks! I'm glad the system is doing what it's supposed to :) If you have suggestions for lore-appropriate hair/skin color combinations for (sub)races that are currently lacking defaults, feel free to let me know.
