Scrying Change Suggestions

Post by Paint »

Scrying is an odd duck.
A dark horse.
An unquenchable evil.
A pretty interesting way to initiate roleplay when used with good intentions.

Anyways, I don't think that scrying is broken or terrible, but I do think it could use a bit of tweaking given right now it's a pretty easy vector for harassment, and conversely, can often feel completely useless for the scrier;

Here's my proposed changes. Mull them over if you'd like:
1. Scry immunity. Whether or not a scrying attempt is successful, make it so the target of a scry can't be targeted by that specific scier again for 18-24 IRL hours. This will give people who are repeatedly harassed by scriers a bit of a break, and encourages factions to have a wider network of scriers to rely on. Or, perhaps, to send an actual spy instead.

2. Scry failure CD. Reduce the cooldown for failed scrying attempts to 5 minutes instead of 10. Because of the proposed change above, repeat scrying is less of an issue, but being able to scry folks related to the primary target offers a venue for counterplay while encouraging factions to build deeper dossiers and knowledge about their intended targets.

3. Don't refresh the scry CD when resting. Doing so will help prevent scriers from obsessively drinking themselves stupid and scrying, trying to catch a group out.

4. Add a hidden willsave for scriers to overcome whenever they scry another scrier, or someone with a broken mirror who successfully detects their scrying attempt. On a failed save, change the message letting you know you've been scried to give some detail about the scrier as well. Race. Aura, etc etc.

I think these changes encourage the use of scry while dissuading some of the cheesier tactics and habits associated with it.
