Different in-game journal when stealthing

Post by Ad Astra »

Description: Basically, I was looking at my journal unstealthed. Entered some things, closed it. Stealthed, opened it again, and I saw a completely different journal. Possibly full of lost entries I didn't realize were lost, or maybe it is just an old version of the notepad of my journal. I'm not completely sure.

Steps to reproduce: Open journal unstealthed. Close it. Stealth. Open journal.

Expected result: For it to be the same journal.

Actual result: Different journal, possibly a very old version of my journal.

Misc Notes: I went across severs a few times, entering notes unstealthed. This was the first time I did so stealthed, or at least tried to and was surprised by what I saw.

Which Server(s)?: Underdark

Gaming Platform(s)?: PC

I seem to recall that when there's changes to your name (Tags such as Server/slave, stealthing, or using disguise system) Your journal changes too. Sort of starting a 'new' journal for each change (though I think changes that are the same - such as going in stealth, the changes you made in stealth might fix?)
I hope this explains?
One thing I've also been told is NEVER EVER EVER have your journal open whilst you're transitioning from one state to another, as that can wipe your journal.

I hope that's a clear and mostly correct answer. It'd be nice if it was fixed.

This too shall pass.

(I now have a DM Discord (I hope) It's DM GrumpyCat#7185 but please keep in mind I'm very busy IRL so I can't promise how quick I'll get back to you.)

Oh god, good to know. I was afraid it was disguise level. Sounds like one of those troublesome base engine things. I was curious and tested stealthing with my journal open a bit, I'm lucky that didn't wipe it.

It is indeed an engine thing. The game basically stores and loads your journal with a file name derived from your character's current name.

You can work around this by using symbolic links (ln -s on Linux, mklink on Windows). Basically symlink the disguise/stealth name txts to the original character journal txt in your Documents/Neverwinter Nights/localvault directory. That way you're always reading and writing that one.
