Time in the UD

Post by Beefcake »

Hey folks,

I have a question with how time is designated in the UD.

I know that "cycles" equate to "days".

What about weeks, months, years, etc? Are there specific associations for those measurements of time?

Thanks!

I am not sure there is anything "official" about cycles. I remember that in the ole days, almost 20 years back, some UD'ers invented "cycle", because day and night on the surface relate to sun and moon. And many UD'ers might never have seen either. So day and night simply wouldn't make sense. Greetings like "Good morning", "good day" and "good evening" would be rather weird in a place where it was supposed to be darkness all the time. How would UD'ers know about it? I think that "dark cycle" is used by many, which makes more sense.
I am unsure of a similar Arelithian tradition for weeks, months and years.

I think most people still default to tenday for a week. Tencycle just sounds a little odd. Months are months, years are years.

Andunor has a bell system that some players reference similar to menzoberranzan and it's crystal. There is a bell chime that marks every hour iirc.

UDer have no interest (or sometimes even knowledge) of the sun and moon outside of perhaps some instances of religious interests, so day, night, month and year are terms which make no sense in the absence of sun and moon, however UDers do sometimes have the knowledge of Toril's rotation, so a cycle makes a lot of sense, and is something some UDers might have interests in keeping track of. Hours, minutes and seconds would make about as much sense to a UDer as to a surfacer so those are fine as well. Basically all time units who dont directly involve sun/moon are legit.

Cycle = day
Trine = an excellent game series worth trying out with friends
Bags = 1000 gold
Dongs = 1 hour
Drowess = female drow
Gnolless = female gnoll
Tricycle = something you ride, also 1 RL day
xas jaluk = a whole movement

RP only starts at 30 if you're a coward.

Skullport has a water clock, to add to the above examples.
