Underdark Wood Disparity

Post by Mythic »

I've noticed that both Zhurkwood (hardwood) and Softwood (Tinder Fungus) are fewer and far between compared to surface Trees (Both hard and softwood) But also give far less wood in comparison!

Tinder Fungus : Average 2 Softwood
Softwood Tree : Average 6 Softwood

Zhurkwood Root : Average 3.5 Hardwood
Hardwood Tree : Average 5 Hardwood

There's also a few monsters on the surface (Namely Treants) Which drop Wood. Compared to the underdark which has no creature that drops wood.

So my feedback would really be, With how few the sources are around. The average should be made higher for underdark sources.

And as they are also mushrooms, Fungal Shamblers would be an good mob to parity Treants.

Thoughts? And has anyone else experienced the lack of wood in the underdark?

Howling around all year long

To expand on what Sorrow is saying, because I enquired about this exact issue previously…

The lower availability and yield of timber in the Underdark is by deliberate design, intended to encourage Underdark characters to either seek trade with the surface, or to travel there themselves to acquire it.

Part of what drives stories and promotes growth and change is risk taking behaviour, and conflict.

If every resource that was needed was available in one location, then folks wouldn’t have to engage with other characters or travel to new locations, and it is that need that therefore drives activity.

Is it inconvenient? Yes.

Can it be frustrating? Hell yes.

But it can also be an opportunity to branch out and find new roleplay and stories.

This is also why there’s no kaethe bushes in the Underdark, and why no bars in the Underdark sell kaethe… to push Underdark characters to trade or to travel to the surface to get it for themselves.
