I've recently brought a friend to Arelith. He's had a very frustrating experience with the new player limits. It seems there are basic functions of the server that are blocked off until a certain amount of playtime has accrued.
I understand these restrictions are in place likely to prevent malicious behavior, but I strongly feel that they can be improved to prevent new players from having a bitter experience.
In this particular case, all the items from his storage chest were not saved, and the only indication of this was a highly generalized error message that's re-used in many places. This was a big blow to his impression of the server, as he spent the entirety of his playtime up until now exploring the crafting system and stored most of his things in the chest.
Here are some options for improvement, and others can certainly pitch in:
-
Return the unsaved items to the player's inventory.
-
Make the error messages more specific and noticeable (float above head?). Message boards, storage chests, fixtures, etc. all share the same generic error message.
-
Either prevent new players from purchasing quarters if they can't use storage chests or remove this particular restriction. As it stands right now, they're a trap for new players that don't realize their latest instance of the error message refers to the chest.
Current Error Message:
Since this error message occurs many times for new players, does not pop up above their head, and has the same text every time, it's not obvious to the player what action precisely was prevented.
I highly recommend the server consider these restrictions overall and how they may impact a new player's experience.
Cheers,
TD
