Bartending

Post by JelliedJoseph »

For those confused, there is a bartending system on Arelith: https://wiki.nwnarelith.com/Taverns#Bartending

The gist of the system is that you can get hired to be a server, then you pour drinks and get rewarded for it by climbing the ranks and becoming a bartender and a brewmaster. Supposedly you also get fired for inactivity.

My feedback is:

  1. You never get fired so characters are permanently servers if they ever got hired
  2. The amount of drinks you have to pour and the time you have to spend are ridiculous (I only managed to get brewmaster with thousands of drinks and a couple of hours weekly)

I think, if any developer is interested, they could look into the code that fires characters and make it work, and also look into making getting promoted in bars less intensive.

edit: A user on the discord did give the feedback that the system might just depend on drinks poured (with 200-400 per week being enough), and not time, so possibly the 2nd issue I had is more one of obscurity than actual issues with the system.

I tried this system in the past, some taverns are quite away from where players walks by, making it very difficult to get people in the area where the bartender is.

Would be it possible that tavern entrance.. somehow.. gets a sign, a flag, a hin flipping an arrow sign towards the entrance, stating a server is in the bar?

Sure, a player could go outside and drop a sign, but, sometimes, that is just another sign between all the fixtures in the area, so it is easy to miss.

Some of the bartenders of the Eagle in the past (Me and some others) have used the signs when we are "on shift". I find that using something like a candelabra worked better though as people would know that the candelabra meant a bartender was working. Having the sign by the entrance or near by for the bar also helps. One could do the same at the Nomad as well... Two ways in, two signs by both doors....

Other bars on the server though maybe not as frequented may have issues so this isnt the end all be all solution but there is also nothing that stops you from making advertisements etc etc.. Heck you could even get a golem to hold a sign for you that says.. bartender on duty, and have it stand in front of the bar.....

So I bartended on one of my recently passed characters. It was incredibly easy to hit and keep brewmaster, and even go into the hidden ranks above brewmaster.

All you have to do, is click (every IRL week, every 7 IRL days) a tap 200 times. That's it. Do that, you'll be at brewmaster after 3 weeks.

Here's how it breaks down:

  • Activity = Clicking A Drink.

  • Every 7 weeks, each individual bar checks your activity at that bar.

  • If you got enough activity to hit the next rank, you'll get it on the 7th (or 8th?) day.

  • If, by some miracle, you didn't get enough activity, you'll be demoted.

Eventually, drinks will start costing 0 gold (this is what I refer to as brewmaster++).

Here's some RP things you can do with the extra drinks:
-- Go around town, offering drinks to people.
-- Go to other towns, offering drinks to people and advertise your bar.
-- Leave your drinks on your bar tables, so you can leave the bar and keep people drunk.
-- Give your drinks to your local government (it's not a bribe it's not a bribe it's not a bribe).

I'd semi-regularily do "kaeth runs" where I'd deliver 1000~ kaeth to locals. I'd also give bulk-orders of ale to dwarven writ-workers, that kind of thing.

I'm mixed on getting fired. Mainly because I feel like if you can re-apply via npc then really being demoted isn't that different from being fired. That said, I do feel like it's weird that a bartender's current rank is displayed in (text). My darts mastery isn't displayed, is the implication that employees wear badges showcasing their rank? Imo it would be more immersive to just have a generic (tag) with only the pc knowing their bartender rank except in cases of pc owned bars where it'd make sense for the owner to have some sort of implied roster of employee performance.

Edit: I also think getting progress points for pouring drinks should either have a cap or just be replaced with a more generous time based progress system. Not for any great reason I just think that the design currently encourages silly behavior like mass pouring hundreds of drinks.

i think being able to quit should be done instead of 'fired'

all that said this system is super old and kind of
awful

it is also prone to breaking if you're bartending multiple bars and making use of the system in place. it can also just break if you're doing just one : ^ )

All AI art is trash.
