Improved Spell Components
I see this working as either a separate, wizard only crafting tree, with its own crafting station, or as an alternative spellbook/component bag item.
Unlike current spell components, which despite making absolute sense, are a rather boring and forgettable chore-like mechanic, the idea behind this suggestion is to add a lot more flavor, mystery, and perhaps weight to the whole thing.
The biggest difference here would be that instead of simply allowing a wizard to cast higher leveled spells, the components would provide new magical abilities altogether, ones that interact more with the game world itself, rather than just murder twenty generations of goblins with a sneeze.
To do this, the components would need to become less..standard and well known, and more recipe based, with a lot of experimentation to it. With this I mean that there would be no recipe list, no written down formulas (other than those made in game by players).
A wizard would have to pick up random things, put them together in his crafting station/component pouch...and see what happens.
Example:
Gustav Fireloins puts together the bone of a giant, a tensers scroll, and a potion of endurance. He speaks the command word and BAM, for the next ten minutes he has doubled his own size.
Gustav also decides to try and mix together a bone wand, chicken feathers, and a polymorph potion. He ends up with a 5 use Wand that transforms a target into a chicken for X amount of time.
He then tries another recipe that another mage told him about. He gathers ten slabs of granite, 5 dwarven incantations, and 10 iron ingots. He ends up creating a magical door he can place, and lock, wherever he chooses, that lasts for X amount of time.
All of that being said I am aware all of this would involve a whole lot of scripting, and work, and many things would be limited, or made impossible by the game engine itself.
But in thought, at least, it seems like it could be fun.
