Now it's very obvious they have a colossal army and the will to use it outside their borders.

That's what changed. The fact DMs wouldn't do it for PCs isn't something that should be factored in IC.
I understand the position you are in sucks. But your faction totally brought it on themselves, by starting a huge war with almost EVERY good faction at once.

You even had a chance to peacefully surrender and ignored the terms.

Our dm might not have done the most smooth job, but ICly, I see absolutely no problem with what happened to you.

So it's only okay to be upset when people have a problem if it's on the Cordor/Guldorand side? :P

Heya! Speaking as someone on the losing 'side,' but who didn't stick around long enough to get curb stomped in the battle.

Losing is fantastic so long as it's meaningful. That whole 'losing is fun' bit is actually really true when it's done in a way that feels... Authentic, and no matter how badly you get beat up (Hi Elena! Lucia's still smarting in-game!), you've got a few healthy, fun options to execute once you've scraped yourself together.

Losing in circumstances that don't really give your characters much reasonable recourse, where you can't even shake your fist at the enemy afterwards? Such as, say, dying in heavy lag to NPCs. I think that's less fun. I'm sympathetic to the difficulties of running such a big event, involving so many people and so much coordination (to say nothing of an ill-timed crash, ouch), but giving the losers a chance afterwards to make their loss developmental instead of frustrating isn't unreasonable.

I think if this went off without a hitch and Wharftown got their face (rightfully) beaten in more personally by Cordor and Co., without lag suppressing a lot of roleplay, you'd hear a much different, much more positive tone on this thread. All in all, this really only seems like a hiccup in a much larger, longer conflict. Bring on the cold war after this heat!

Done.

The lag was horrible. Beyond unplayably horrible. I remember sitting for 30 seconds trying to cast one spell, then when I cast it, I was totally alone and the spell hit nothing. I think everyone shared your pain there.

The DM agrees with me.

Sh.

EDIT: Okay taking the bait. Not only that, but this wasn't even ABOUT our war, but an unrelated DM plot. Leave it out.

EDIT 2: Also factually incorrect, Wharftown only went to war with Guldorand at the start. The rest happened naturally in game over time.

I've put a note by Alyss up on the Wharftown boards which I think should be enough to cover your current concerns?

Let me know if this isn't enough or what not.
Could we get a sense of what the boards say? Does it say anything about the outcome of the battle? It seems this would be valuable RP information for our side moving forward, too.

That's ingame investigation work, Councilor! ;)

Whatever note you're referring to, TH, is no longer on the Wharftown notice board.

FYI: I did see said note by Alyssa about a day ago in Wharftown. So it was actually there for a few hours at least.

Hence my use of 'No Longer' rather than, 'Was never there'.

I think if you take events as they played out at surface value, whether or not one side won over the other can be debated.

I know Buster personally took it all as a defeat for Cordor. The allied forces may have taken down the mayor, but 1. we were all forced to turn tail and flee back to where we'd come from when the pirates showed up (this being especially hard for Buster since he is like Pro-pirate killer and killing pirates has become his longest standing purpose in life, and then forced to turn tail and run from them. Talk about having to swallow your pride!) Then okay, they captured three of the most prominent enemy leaders, but then had them slip through their fingers, one of them being his longest lived nemesis. These things made the battle horribly demoralizing for Buster (which, mind you, is great for RP, I loved it!) and turn injury to insult when seen it was more pirates that caused him to lose Asen. At the end of the day, Buster was just lucky he survived.

To him, Cordor didn't achieve any goal it set out to accomplish at the outset of the battle.
The heir wasn't found.
Cordor couldn't take over the town.
Asen escaped, robbing Buster of any semblance of revenge
All other Wharftowners escaped, removing any leverage Cordor had over the town, putting them right back where they were in the first place, except now, they were down multitudes of soldiers after the battle

And arguably the most demoralizing thing to happen, Buster's beloved Cordor Navy was pounded (and at best, forced to retreat to effect repairs) and will not fully recover for a very long time.

So after all these losses, Buster has to acknowledge that the largest threat is no longer Wharftown and its banites. The largest threat is this fleet of pirates. Strong enough to decisively turn the tide of battle and severely cripple his navy. Thus his focus has shifted away from the banites to address the larger threat.

So what's my TL/DR?
Whether the outcome was positive or negative for your side can greatly depend on your point of view, and either side can consider themselves to have either won or lost. Regardless, there are some GREAT opportunities for evolving rp out of this!

To me, I guess this is why the event was so fun for me. The outcome is what you make it. Make it interesting :D
