Since Ranger Animal Companion boosts were deemed too powerful in combat, what about offering a reason to have your animal companion out... and offer non-combat bonuses.
1st... add in console command:
-an_comp
what this does is de-spawn your animal companions. your companion goes away and cannot return unless you are out of combat... AND has a short cooldown... to eliminate spamming.
This is so when your companion drags aggro, you can have it disengage, and recall it later where it is safe to return to you. -this also allows you to remove your companions upon entering a settlement area or for RP purposes, and let you recall it without the need to rest (meaning you don't loose your wards)
Specific animal Companions give you "See Invisible" while they are out... since your animal companion has heightened senses, and can detect invisible creatures through smell and hearing that don't require sight.
This would make a Ranger with an animal companion THE best scout/Sentry in the game.
(Require a 2/3 ranger levels to keep this ability)
Having an animal companion out gives a +20 Animal Empathy when used against wild creatures of the same animal type as your companion.
Have a bear companion? Then animal empathy vs. all bears in the game are boosted by 20.
Through conversation with your companion, you can give it instructions to 'stay in stealth' even when your PC is no, or 'never stealth' keeping your companion OUT of stealth, even when your PC is sneaking around.
All these are all non-combat bonuses that offer the highly-invested Ranger exceptional value to any group, and can be added in through conversation with your companion to activate.
But most of all, being able to summon your companion and resummon it again without needing to rest to do it is paramount.
